Overview What is RISE? Intended Users Features Requirements Prototype Demo Usability Test Future Work

Real-time Interactive Self-help Electronics is a portable device providing assisted self-help for persons suffering from acute depression and anxiety disorders. RISE strives to create a safe and secure environment for users to record their true thoughts and feelings, thus facilitating more accurate assessments as well as empowering the user to utilize self-help whenever necessary. What is RISE?

Intended Users Suffer from acute depression and anxiety Currently undergoing group therapy and/or treatment with a psychiatrist Geared towards, though not limited to, users between the ages of 30 and 50 Most likely working full-time and do not have time for or access to other methods of self-help (books, tapes, etc.) during the day Find face-to-face contact and personal interaction with psychiatrists and other patients intimidating Use a PDA

Features Immediate self-help procedures, i.e. breathing & meditation techniques Daily-logged journal writing Psychotherapy prompts Communication functionality (psychiatrist or help group) Portable Customizable Safe & secure

Requirements Pocket PC 2002 Operating System 9 MB disk space Internet Connectivity Headphones (Optional)

Prototype Demo

Subjects:  Ages between  Fully recovered from a depression or anxiety disorder, minimum of two years  One user had professional interface experience Tasks  Seven different tasks  Designed to navigate through program functions Usability Test Recap

Tasks  Find immediate self-help from R.I.S.E.  Enter daily journal entry  therapist  Make appointment request  Record medication dosage  Practice therapeutic exercises  View image/video stored in R.I.S.E. Usability Test Recap

Usability Test Results Programming errors Interface design flaws  Location of buttons  Difficulty navigating back to the main menu or self-help menu Need for more self help techniques Positive Feedback: interface layout, functionality, simple and clean, effective

Conclusions All of the interfaces implemented; functionality needs to be added to complete software Crucial parts of further design and implementation:  Feedback from actual patients in therapy  Re-designing functions for efficient implementation on PDA Best measure of performance – pilot test with a depression/anxiety therapy group to test success with prolonged use

Future Work Add more dimension to the navigation system:  “Next” and “Back” buttons  Visual indication of where in the interface user is Add more self-help resources Pilot test with an established therapy group Expansion of features  Allow therapist to write new exercises for patients  Search engine for journal entries  Display medication, mood information for therapist to monitor progress  Connectivity with PC so journal entries, exercise instructions, and s may be printed

Acknowledgments Dr. Shneiderman Usability test volunteers Reviewers:  Colin Dixon  Michael Chu Fan  August Ongkasuwan  David Um.
