Governor’s School A Summer Program for Academically or Intellectually Gifted High School Students

Program Description The Governor's School is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. The program, which is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in selected performing/visual arts areas, is located on two campuses of 400 students each: –Governor's School West at Salem College in Winston- Salem (begun in 1963)Salem College –Governor's School East at Meredith College in Raleigh (begun in 1978)Meredith College

Students are nominated in one of 11 areas: ArtChoral MusicDance Drama EnglishFrench SpanishInstrumental MusicMathematics Natural ScienceSocial Science

Eligibility Only open to rising seniors (exception made for rising Juniors in choral music, dance, & instrumental music) Students not selected as rising juniors may be nominated as rising seniors Can only be nominated in one of the 11 areas Student must commit to the entire 6 week program Legal resident of NC

Nomination Criteria Aptitude test scores: composite or subtest scores documenting percentile ranges from 92% through 99% Achievement test scores: composite, subtest, or EOC scores in appropriate are of nomination 92%-99% Scores other than EOC must have been given in the 9 th, 10 th, or 11 th grade Scores from EOC tests taken in 6 th, 7 th, or 8 th grades will be accepted Most recent grade in area of nomination Class rank Most recent transcript

Note: Any EOC test may be used for students nominated in Spanish, French, or Performing Visual Arts. (92% or higher) Any EOC test in the student’s area of nomination may be used for students nominated in Math, English, Natural Science, or Social Science (92% or higher)

I’m Nominated… Now what???

Nomination Procedures The nominee must complete a Governor’s School application form that has several parts.

Application Form Completed and signed by student and the parent or guardian Basic identifying information/ demographic data Statement of intent TWO recommendation forms– one should be from a high school teacher in the area of recommendation

Academic Essay Topics

Essays: Each nominee must also submit TWO typed essays Essay 1: Identify and discuss one significant problem or issue in contemporary culture that concerns you: some of the dimensions of this issue, why it matters to you, and what possible solutions you or others might propose to deal with it.

Essay 2: Choose one topic… 1.Describe the relevance of a 20 th or 21 st century work of art or literature and detail how it has influenced your thought and/or action. (English) 2.Discuss an important 20 th or 21 st century idea in natural science or social science and explain how it has influenced your thoughts and/or action. (Natural Science or Social Science) 3.Describe your response to the following quote: “The true spirit of delight…is to be found in mathematics as surely as in poetry.: -- Bertrand Russell (Mathematics) 4.Describe your interest in the Spanish or French language. Please include any personal experienced specifically related to foreign language and culture and how they inspired you to explore the Spanish and French- speaking world. (Foreign Language)

Performing/ Visual Arts Topics

Essay 1: Identify and discuss one significant problem or issue in contemporary culture that concerns you: some of the dimensions of this issue, why it matters to you, and what possible solutions you or others might propose to deal with it.

Essay 2: Choose one of the following topics. Describe the importance of a 20 th or 21 st century work of art or literature and explain how it has influenced your thought and/or action. Discuss an important 20 th or 21 st century idea in natural science, math, or social science and explain how it has influenced your thought and/or action.

Other: List of school and community activities, awards, honors, you have participated in or received during the past three years, and tell why any two are important to you. List residential schools (such as Summer Ventures, NC School of Science and Math) you have attended and when.

Numbers…. Each school district is allocated a certain number of nominations based on student population French and Spanish are UNLIMTED and will not count against the number of academic nominations allowed (can not be superintendents top picks) Superintendents from each school district nominate TWO candidates that are ensured to be chosen.

Nominations for students who will not count against the total number of nominations: play double-reed instruments (oboe & bassoon) brass instruments (trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, and tuba) percussion instruments, or string instruments (violin, viola, cello, bass, and harp) whose vocal ranges are alto, tenor, or bass/baritone

Arts: Students in the performing/ visual arts will audition in addition to the other requirements.

IF CHOOSEN YOU MUST COMMIT TO ATTEND AND PARTICIPATE FOR THE ENTIRE SIX WEEKS!!! DO NOT TAKE AN OPPORTUNITY AWAY FROM SOMEONE ELSE IF YOU DO NOT PLAN TO ATTEND THE ENTIRE SESSION!
