Theme Communication * Cultures * Connections * Comparisons * Communities Essential Questions The purpose of language study is to communicate so I can understand others and they can understand me. Learning a language leads to greater understanding of oneself and others. To know a nation is a complex task. We live in a diverse but increasingly interrelated world. Language and culture reflect and influence each other constantly. People behave differently in different regions of the world. Tourism creates links between regions and economic activities. Learning a language leads to greater understanding of others and why people think and act in different ways. Language learning occurs through meaningful, authentic activities in the target language. Language teaching should prepare learners for successful intercultural communication.

Communication * Cultures * Connections * Comparisons * Communities Theme Enduring Understandings How can I understand others when I do not know all the words? How can I make myself understood when I am just beginning to learn a new language? What does global citizenship mean to me? Who are the “Chinese” people? In what ways is an “Arab” family similar and different from my family? What do I need to know about another culture in order to be able to communicate successfully? How do people in another culture stay healthy? What influence has this civilization had on the U.S.? In what ways do teachers integrate the teaching of culture?
