Nasa’s Amazing Educators in Space Not to be confused Pigs in Spaaaaaaaaaaace

What are Educators in Space? Traditional mission specialists would highlight a topic focusing on the mission. The resulting presentation is relayed to NASA for rebroadcast on cable and satellite TV. These broadcasts are primarily aimed at teachers and students.

What Would NASA broadcast? This month’s theme is Mathematics One show for today is “Space Flight: The Application of Orbital Mechanics” Some of the shows also include a lesson plan for teaching the presentation in the classroom

So… What is an Educator Astronaut? These people are teachers who are willing to Train as an Astronaut for 2 years Work With NASA in the development of new ways to connect space exploration with the classroom Motivate students to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics Encourage students to become the next generation of space explorers

So how do they differ from other Astronauts? They are professional teachers with little or no prior military service They are dedicated to inspiring students to consider careers in math, science, engineering and technology They want to make learning fun

So do they train like other Astronauts? Yes They do Their training lasts for months They train right along side regular astronauts

So what does the training consist of? The teachers receive military survival training They train in a T-38 Talon like the other astronauts do They receive water survival training and become SCUBA certified if not already They receive neutral buoyancy/weightless training

Training part II They receive training in Space Shuttle and ISS operations They receive spacesuit and EVA jetpack training They also get training in operating the Shuttle’s robotic arm

And for those Brave souls who dared to go. S. CHRISTA CORRIGAN MCAULIFFE TEACHER IN SPACE PARTICIPANT (DECEASED) Barbara R. Morgan NASA Astronaut Joe Acaba Ricky Arnold Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger

Ok what does NASA hope to Accomplish? NASA hopes to make math, science, engineering and technology more accessible to students NASA is looking to inspire students to become next set of astronauts and scientists. To share the space experience with everyone

Where do we go from here? Teachers in Space ( would like to see 100 teachers a year take part in space missionshttp:// NASA Wants to teach teachers how to teach space exploration in the classroom
