2 This paper discusses - Analyzing user’s instant messaging (IM) behavior Gathering metrics on user behavior – –How often a user chats with others –Time he spends on IM with a particular contact –Frequency of chat with a particular contact –Average duration of IM conversation. Gathering data on users –They were from a variety of groups at IBM. They were between age of years old. –Their chat logs were generated by the IBM Sametime 7.5 IM application –They volunteered to share their chat data.

3 Measurements What users do I talk to more often? What is the typical length of my conversations? What days of the week do I user IM more? What month has more activity compared to others?

6 Conversations patterns in a week

7 Conclusions IM usage between users can be quite useful in IT planning, social networking and productivity improvements. Study of inter-user IM pattern can help understand workplace dynamics. IM behavior between users can be used to form high performance teams. Study between IM, phone, and usage of a user together can be used to plan IT cost planning.
