Solving Linear Equations Rule 7 ‑ 1: We can perform any mathematical operation on one side of an equation, provided we perform the same operation on the other side.

Method for Solving Equations Rule 7 ‑ 2: To solve both linear and second ‑ degree equations: 1)Clear all fractions. 2)Move all terms containing the unknown to one side. 3)Move all constants to the other side. 4)Perform the operations necessary to make the coefficient of the unknown equal to 1. 5)Verify the solution.

Inverse Operations Additive Inverse The number you add to another number to equal zero. The inverse of addition is subtraction. Multiplicative Inverse The number you multiply by another number to equal 1. The inverse of multiplication is division.

Moving Terms Rule 7 ‑ 3: Terms may be moved from one side of an equation to the other side by changing their signs.

Square Roots and Squares Key Point: The square root of the square of a number is that number. Key Point: The square of the square root of a number is that number.

More Inverse Operations The Inverse of square is square root. The inverse of reciprocal is reciprocal.
