How do we (CSI Library and ITC) serve the mission of the College? CSI Library, Information & Instructional Technology Center CSI Library and ITC

The mission of the Instructional Technology Center (ITC) is to provide leadership in promoting the efficient and effective use of educational technology to enhance teaching and learning at CSI, and increase access to higher education. ITC CSI Library, Information & Instructional Technology Center

Our Center (now located in Library 114 and 116)

ITC offers a great variety of services and resources to CSI faculty, staff and students. ITC staff: –provides technology training and support classes and workshops seminars one-on-one training and support online courses Web-based tutorials inservice training TechTips –designs and maintains the CSI Web site; have you met Carlos? Instructional Technology Center (ITC) CSI Library, Information & Instructional Technology Center

ITC staff: –provides support for online course development and online course delivery Blackboard e-Learning training –assists faculty with integrating technology into their curriculum –designs printed and Web-based marketing materials for the College –develops presentations to help the College increase awareness and further strengthen community support for CSI Instructional Technology Center (ITC) CSI Library, Information & Instructional Technology Center

CSI serves the needs of students who need to or prefer taking classes online because they have family and work responsibilities, schedule conflicts, or just want to save time and money by cutting down on commute and baby sitting. In 2000 CSI invested in Blackboard, an online course management system that is currently used by over 3,000 students; over 45,000 average page views a day; 195,000 page views on the most active day. Many faculty use Blackboard as a supplement to regular face-to-face classes, providing online access to notes, presentations, tests, assignments. Blackboard and Online Learning CSI Library, Information & Instructional Technology Center

Blackboard has also been used by committees, as well as student organizations About one or two major upgrades roll out each year Each version adds new tools and functionality Although CSI only has the basic edition (not the enterprise edition), we still have access to some campus-wide collaboration and communication tools – e.g. campus-wide announcement and campus-wide calendar Blackboard and Online Learning CSI Library, Information & Instructional Technology Center

We are constantly researching and evaluating new technologies, and looking for feedback from faculty, staff and students –Web-conferencing/virtual classroom applications WebEx Centra LiveMeeting CSI Library, Information & Instructional Technology Center Instructional Technology Center (ITC)

Features: –Real-time interaction or record and play back later –Co-browsing –PowerPoint –VoIP or voice via regular phone –Video in some of the applications –Application and desktop sharing, file sharing –Works around most firewalls CSI Library, Information & Instructional Technology Center Instructional Technology Center (ITC)

Web-based; maybe some application/player may need to be loaded initially Some features are more bandwidth intensive then others Every system has some benefits and some limitations Prices also vary These systems are not like instant messaging (they do require some management and planning of “conferences”) CSI Library, Information & Instructional Technology Center Instructional Technology Center (ITC)

Examples of use: –Real-time lectures –Real-time review for exams –Online “office hours” –Record instructions once, play back many times (video applications must keep accessibility in mind; may need text-only version) –Tech support Number of people who can be online in the same time depends on the number of “seats” purchased CSI Library, Information & Instructional Technology Center Instructional Technology Center (ITC)

Library Web site The open lab moved to the library. Currently we have 76 computers for students to use (79 with the computers in the group study rooms). We have installed two electric-lift wheelchair accessible computer stations for use by our patrons in wheelchairs. The computer stations in the library have been modified (raised, CPU holders and keyboard/mouse trays added) to ensure that students have adequate space for their books and other materials. Purchased new adjustable chairs with wheels. Fifteen more computers to be added soon CSI Library, Information & Instructional Technology Center CSI Library

CSI Library, Information & Instructional Technology Center CSI Library The group study rooms now are open all day long for use by groups for team projects, discussions, research - or by individuals looking for a quiet place to study. We have installed computers in three of the group study rooms so students can collaborate and do online research on team projects; ordered whiteboards for four rooms The Copy Center (Joan Drown) has moved to the Library Cell phones now are allowed in the library but must be set to manner mode and students must consider others around them when answering their phones.

Voter registration cards are now available in the library. The displays in the Library are changed more frequently, allowing various departments to feature items of interest to their students. Videos and CDs are being moved from behind the Circulation desk on the main floor of the library where they can be browsed by students, faculty and staff. The Library now has a copy of the textbooks used in core classes which can be used in the Library by all of our students (they cannot be checked out). We will be changing these books each semester as instructors change textbooks. We participated in SOAR (Student Orientation Advising Registration Day), Career Fair CSI Library, Information & Instructional Technology Center
