US Strategy Days 2006 4/16/2017 7:46 PM “Application server platforms are the foundation for emerging composite applications” “Application platform suite (APS) products are integrated assemblies of three fundamental runtime technologies” “A Superplatform is a tightly integrated suite of products that provide organizations with a comprehensive platform for enterprise computing” So what is the modern day definition of an App Plat? Here are some analyst views (read) An Application Platform is a term that refers to all the software infrastructure, services and tools needed to create, deploy and maintain IT applications during their lifecycle. Many companies are in this space and define the App Plat in their own particular ways, including – Msft, IBM, Oracle, SAP, BEA. “The platform a customer uses to design, develop, deploy and manage applications to run their business." ©2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. This presentation is for informational purposes only. Microsoft makes no warranties, express or implied, in this summary.

So let’s take a look at the applications environment today and some of the key trends influencing the marketplace (talk through each of the areas on the slide, suggestions below:) Service Orientation : apps are no longer hard coded for purpose: being adaptable to change and having apps that can evolve through a SO is top-of-mind with companies today. Quote: ”Service-oriented architecture (SOA) adoption continues to be strong, especially for the largest enterprises. Satisfaction with SOA runs very high: Nearly 70% of SOA users say they will increase their use of SOA, and 46% of large enterprise users of SOA use it for strategic business transformation. The more disciplined firms are, and the more they do with IT — hence, the more complex their environments — the more likely they are to be early adopters of SOA.” Survey Data Says: The Time For SOA Is Now –Forrester April 14, 2006; Randy Heffner Form Factor explosion : Just about everyone in the room must be aware of the advancements that have been made for information workers to connect to their information on devices, wirelessly, remotely via OWA etc. The demands of users now are much greater than they ever have been – how does the application platform not only accommodate these form factors: the real question is whether it was built with flexibility in mind. User experience, development environment, data format, telecomms hook ups are all key Global SW dev – another key trend is emerging question of outsourcing development vs. keeping it in house: what do you outsource, how do you manage the projects for time to delivery, quality and needs of the business being met. IT departments have complex decisions to make, which in a way were easier when potentially it was all done inhouse. Legacy systems – and the irony of the situation is that whilst all of these demands are made (connected, available remotely and on devices, offshored etc) – the reality of the situation is that many customers still have and will continue to have legacy systems that run parts of their business. All of the investments in mainframes and other systems with huge amounts of data and written code simply can’t be retired. You have to connect the old world with the new, and make it all work So then let’s think of what’s happening on the business side: as I mentioned earlier, the demands of today’s businesses are increasing as they need to compete in a global marketplace, out-deliver and out-innovate competitors and give great customer service. This in turn puts more pressure on IT to provide the infrastructure that enables businesses to thrive and innovate. B2B Connectivity – this can take form in many ways: EDI/connectivity, employees connecting with business partners etc: the fact is that no company can be an electronic island: the interesting additional challenge is that IT needs to facilitate connectivity with people, proceses and information: it’s no longer just simple exchange of data. How can your systems facilitate this? b2C connectivity – this is also critical, as the amount of transactions and interactions done online continues to grow with customers. Here however it’s not just simple connectivity, but it’s also about immersive customer experiences, extending your brand electronically and enhancing customer relationships through great systems and applications. Quote: “Improved user experience will drive the next wave of differentiation. UX will need to be optimized for different styles of interactions” - The Gartner Scenario 2005: IT Leaders' Next Big Decisions, July 2005 A little later we’ll talk about the value of a great user experience for customer retention and loyalty. Company-wide BI – in a connected world where users leverage search engines scour the internet for obtuse facts instantly, and email to devices is always available and expected – providing BI to users when and how they need it is the next frontier of IT systems. It’s a hugely challenging task – providing real time, customized access to company wide information in the appropriate ways. Innovation = change – and finally there’s the reality that a thriving business is an innovative one. And innovation means change – often meaning challenges for IT in terms of systems, adaptability and time to market / responsiveness. But this is really at the core of what application platforms need to do – they need to be a foundation from which a business can drive innovation and thrive on change. 5

Heterogeneous systems Create adaptable solutions built for change 4/16/2017 7:46 PM More easily connect Heterogeneous systems Create adaptable solutions built for change Cohesive technologies that span the IT Lifecycle Increase productivity for individuals, teams & organizations Improve resource allocation, prioritization & risk management Speed time-to-market with higher predictability Thousands of ISV solutions & partners supporting the platform Enterprise scalability and industry-leading TCO Widely adopted tools & technologies So given that our IT customers have clearly told us that this is the role they wanted to play for the business, and that application platform vendors need to help this through great technology, tools and processes, we have focused our efforts at Microsoft on to 3 core areas across all the products we make….to help us deliver on the promise to you. The first pillar of this commitment is to help you more easily build connected and adaptable systems. They key areas we focus on here are: More easily connect your systems, processes, people and information in a heterogeneous environment Create adaptable solutions that are built with process & business change in mind – including enterprise-ready scalability to meet future business needs  Cohesive technologies and processes across the lifecycle (DSI, security, development, deployment, mgt) Secondly, we have heard loud and clear that aligning IT with the Business is critical. We are investing in 3 core areas to facilitate this alignment: Increase productivity for individuals, teams and organizations and drive predictability and quality in systems development Gain greater project visibility and insight – giving you more accurate resource allocation, prioritization and risk management Speed time-to-market for solutions and increase IT agility and responsiveness to business needs And finally, we want to continue to be a business partner that you can work with, that gives you tools, technologies and business choice to fit your needs. We do this in three key ways: Choose solutions that meet your needs: with thousands of solutions (ISV) and partners (Sis) trained on the Microsoft platform Works the way you want: outsourced vs. in-sourced; custom app vs. off the shelf (etc) – we support your business model Widely adopted tools and industry leading TCO / price-for-performance give you greater value We believe that focusing on these three key areas across the Microsoft stack (connected, aligning the business, giving you best ROI and choice), we can be your business partner of choice for application platform needs 6 6 © 2004 Microsoft Corporation. More Efficient Cost Center Business Enabler Strategic Asset 4/16/2017 7:46 PM More adaptive application platform driving core applications and business processes Fully service-oriented, dynamic application platform Brittle, disparate applications and platforms Standards-based, flexible business applications So how do you get there? Infrastructure Optimization Model – In Action The Application Platform Infrastructure Optimization Model from Microsoft has been developed using industry best practices and Microsoft’s and its partners’ own experiences with their shared enterprise customers as well as incorporating the latest IT analysts analysis from leading firms, like Gartner and Forrester. A key goal for Microsoft in creating the APIO model was to develop a simple way to use a maturity framework that is flexible and can easily be used as the benchmark for technical capability and business value. The first step in using the model is to evaluate what maturity level you are at in the model. Once the current maturity level has been established, the next step is to use the model to develop a plan on how to progress through each maturity level in order to reach the target level needed for maximum business benefit. Level 1 Basic The Basic application platform is characterized by brittle, unconnected applications and platforms that hinder the rapid development and interoperability of business critical applications. There is a general lack of process and rigor in how these applications are developed combined in conjunction with ill-defined business processes. Overall health of applications and services is unknown due to a lack of tools and resources. There is no vehicle for collaboration and exchange across development teams or with business users. Customers with Basic infrastructure find their environments extremely hard to manage and optimize leading to higher costs, application backlog and lower IT productivity. Level 2 Standardized The Standardized application platform begins to adopt XML and other industry standards more broadly across departments and with trusted tier 1 trading partners. In addition, they introduce more sophisticated development and data infrastructure that can begin delivering BI reports and analytics to the business. Some business processes and departmental services are automated and delivered within the organization. Companies’ IT departments are in the early stages of moving away from being seen as a cost center and more as a business enabler building more adaptive applications quickly. Level 3 Advanced The Advanced infrastructure is where IT can truly become an enabler and partner with business. The infrastructure and applications are more easily managed, optimized and delivered throughout the IT lifecycle. The business has a stronger view into its core business processes and can rely on IT to quickly build applications that take advantage of new business opportunities or competitive threats. They have standardized on an flexible and robust application platform for their most critical applications and business processes. Level 4 Dynamic Customers with a Dynamic infrastructure are fully aware of the strategic value their infrastructure provides in helping them run their business efficiently and staying ahead of competitors. Costs are fully controlled, integration between users and data, customers and partners, collaboration between business and IT is pervasive. Processes are fully automated, often incorporated into the technology itself allowing IT to be aligned and managed according to the business needs. Additional investments in technology yield specific, rapid, measurable benefits for the business. The use of Service Oriented Architecture is well defined within the company and is delivering adaptive and cost effective applications and application development. 4/16/2017 7:46 PM The catalyst for business growth therefore, is the right application infrastructure and capabilities to manage risk, efficiencies and change while driving better levels of customer experience. We see that there are five essential functional areas – or capabilities – that organizations must focus on to provide the application environment that will move IT from simply an ‘enabler’ to ‘contributor of business innovation’:   Data management: We are seeing more and more industry demand for data management that spans beyond the data center to encompass a broad set of data types as well as the secure capture of the high volume ‘anonymous data’ that sits outside the data center. The ability to access, integrate and manage disparate data sources in mixed IT environments drives greater operational efficiency. Further scalable and high transactional support provides for ‘always on’ reliable business operations. Business intelligence: Customers want a more complete view of the business to inform decision making. Our is goal help people and their organizations by providing actionable business insights to all employees so that they are able to better identify and seize opportunity while mitigating potential risk SOA and business process: We also understand the inherent complexities of connecting systems in heterogeneous environments and aligning core business activities. Our commitment is to provide a flexible service oriented approach to help customers manage change, streamline, connect and automate business processes and interoperate with existing IT investments Development: Delivering software initiatives that drive business value on time and at desired quality requires aligning the right roles and teams across business and IT. Our commitment is to ensure individual and team productivity by offering the right level of visibility, collaboration and control within the software development process. Real-time data capture (BI on software initiatives) and customizable lightweight process and reporting are vital for compliance, project estimation, impact analysis and repeatable success User experience: Business growth through customer expansion and retention through to individual and organizational productivity is rooted in the experience that people have with a company’s applications and services. We are committed to making it easier for IT to deliver customizable and superior user experiences that offer greater competitive differentiation As IT competencies, these are represented through our application platform strategy spanning our underlying platform architecture .NET and WinFX run time components through to core products such as SQL Server; Biztalk Server and Visual Studio combined with Office System and Windows Server System. Our goal is to ensure a trusted adaptable foundation for modern applications. 9 © 2004 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. This presentation is for informational purposes only. Enable creation of quality user experiences 4/16/2017 7:46 PM Enable creation of quality user experiences Empower individuals to analyze and act on information in real-time Amplify team impact and improve quality Ensure greater predictability of and visibility into the development process Drive results from accurate business info Gain greater efficiency and better resource allocation across the entire organization So let’s take some time and walk through our vision for each capability, where we see the industry heading, and also some key updates on releases Microsoft has made or is working on to enhance the offerings within each capability for you. (walk through the slide: key point, it’s not just about the toolsets anymore, it’s about having role based tools and a collaboration platform to drive predictable, secure and cost effective development of solutions that speed time to market) Some of the key momentum we’re seeing in the development space includes: VSTS released to market, great reviews, customer adoption. Focused on role based tools (arch, dev, tester) and we’ll continue to enhance the offerings as we move forward An example of these enhancements we’re looking to make is the Data Professional Team Edition product. You would have seen the demo last night, And finally, we are announcing today that Commerce Server 2005 is available for customers. CS is our solution for companies that want end-to-end B2C and B2B applications. With deep integration into BizTalk as well as ADO.NET technologies, this new release is truly a comprehensive solution for our customers © 2004 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 4/16/2017 7:46 PM When we entered this business in 1994, we really brought a unique vision to the industry. We were going to deliver a database with the rapid development characteristics of the PC platform, the scale of enterprise platforms, with integrated BI, and a much lower TCO due to automated administration. We have delivered against this vision with every new release, and we could say that in many ways the most recent release, SQL Server 2005, is not only the realization of our vision but also a watershed moment, as SQL Server has now grown up from the PC to be (at least) on par with the older competitive products in terms of being a trusted platform for some of the most mission critical systems in the world. We have a vision to meet the needs of the next data explosion and next generation of data-driven applications. We will continue to invest and evolve the themes which had delivered tremendous value for our customers over the last 3 releases of SQL Server: We will push on TCO, focusing on scaling up our enterprise abilities while also dramatically increasing the level of administrative automation We will continue to invest in BI, enabling our customers to deliver real-time insight broadly and deeply within their organizations, with rich and personalized data experiences We will also continue to lead in application development and developer productivity, enabling developers to rapidly deliver the next generation of adaptive applications, designed and built to synchronize seamlessly in an occasionally connected environment And finally we will evolve our platform to go beyond relational data, beyond OLAP, to truly support all of the digital data types of the future Investments across these 4 themes also require us to think more broadly about the market and our offering. To met the needs of the next generation of applications we will be broadening our view, from a database product to a complete data platform. Today we already provide many new value data services, and SQL Server today deals with “entities”, but in an ad-hoc fashion. We see a future where you will only need to define the structure of data once, that’s what we mean by “entities”. So for instance you could define an “Asset”, “Customer”, “Account” then use it throughout your systems. This creates a virtuous cycle in data services - define an “Asset”, build SharePoint asset tracking app, create workflow to e-mail form to update asset status, create reports of asset status, etc. You can think of this concept as an entity data “platform”, and the idea is that others within your company and in your customer and partner ecosystem can connect to the entity data platform seamlessly. 12 © 2004 Microsoft Corporation. Loosely coupled devices, applications, services, data… 4/16/2017 7:46 PM AT the core of a connected and adaptable IT environment is a flexible architecture that provides friction free flow of information within and outside the company – mapped to processes that deliver that information to the right person at the right time. Microsoft is continuing to drive integrated solutions with web services (.Net) built in – meaning that across the stack we aim for high levels of interoperability and information flow. We are also focused on delivering software that helps our customers streamline, automate and optimize business processes in a flexible, reusable manner to accommodate business growth Interesting quote: “The Future of software = business process platform with content-based process definitions, SOA/Web Services based architectures. Agility is the priority.” - The Gartner Scenario 2005: IT Leaders' Next Big Decisions, July 2005 Q&A OBA and BizTalk Server enable customers to manage the full spectrum of their business processes, from collaborative through highly structured system-to-system processes, and access important line of business data from within Microsoft Office-based applications.  How does BizTalk Server fit in to the picture? BizTalk Server enables customers to create and manage business processes that span multiple back-end systems and trading partners and expose these processes to people through Office applications like SharePoint, InfoPath, and Excel. What is BizTalk Server’s role in system and process integration/management? BizTalk Server is really our core technology that connects systems and processes to line of business applications and back-end systems.  Customers can surface data from these applications and systems into common desktop applications like Microsoft Office. Note the two major pieces of TechEd News: (1) BTS R2 (2) OBA Loosely coupled devices, applications, services, data… Web services & XML at the core 13 © 2004 Microsoft Corporation. 4/16/2017 7:46 PM Improving organizations by providing business insights to all employees leading to better, faster, more relevant decisions Complete and Integrated BI offering Widespread delivery of intelligence through Microsoft Office Scalable to the enterprise and affordable for all departments At the core of Microsoft’s BI strategy is to take and end-to-end approach: from the server and reporting services up through to the desktop client. In doing this we believe that we will expand the market for partners and drive BI out in a pervasive way, with all roles in customers’ organizations having access to infromation that they need. © 2004 Microsoft Corporation. Designer / Developer collaboration - Expression & Visual Studio 4/16/2017 7:46 PM Designer / Developer collaboration - Expression & Visual Studio Windows Vista - .Net 3.0 (WinFX) enables next gen apps Office as a development platform – Duet and OBA Strong tools experience for Office enables managed code solutions VS support for the 2007 version of Office shipping in October Smart client, thin client & web based – AJAX, ASP.Net and “Atlas” A key area that can make a huge difference in companies around their application adoption and user productivity is the experience that the users get through the user interface of the app itself. Too many times the applications are focused on connecting systems, business logic and workflow, speed and technology support – and the user gets left as an afterthought in the process. This is a critical area to get right! User productivity and adoption of business tools can make or break the IT department’s effort and applications budget spend. It can also enhance the overall system ROI through allowing users to more intuitively use the tools, reduce helpdesk calls and in many cases help themselves to solutions in their daily operations. Microsoft has always believed in the user experience and bringing productivity to business users and consumers across the Windows environment and applications. We also are focused on giving developers and development teams the tools they need to create an immersive, compelling and natural experience for users. Visual Studio 2005 is our development toolset to enable development teams to design, develop and deploy richer applications faster: we’ve focused on developer productivity and tighter links between our tools and server technologies to speed the process of application development. With the upcoming release of Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) we take this a step further and help corporate development teams work together on a specific, role based level: architects, designers, developers, testers can all work together seamlessly and the costs of app development is decreased. Many developers and ISVs today leverage the Microsoft Office platform of applications and servers for the core of their design and UI work. Microsoft has invested billions in R&D for this product line, to ensure that users can get the most out of their tools for daily productivity: with familiar, intuitive applications and functionality. Leveraging this functionality and look and feel is a great way for developers and ISVs to lower training costs, improve user productivity and boost ROI of their applications for companies. A great example of this work can be seen in many CRM applications (Microsoft’s own included) that leverage the look and feel of Outlook – to help users migrate from contact management to CRM – and BI applications that leverage pivot tables in Excel. With Visual Studio .NET 2003, Microsoft introduced Visual Studio Tools for Office that enabled developers to author applications targeting the Microsoft Office System using managed code and professional developer tools. This capability advanced greatly with Visual Studio 2005 where Word and Excel are now hosted as design surfaces within Visual Studio. Microsoft Office now becomes a building block in every developer’s toolkit and a key part of our platform strategy going forward. We’ve extended this support further with the recently announced “Cypress” project, which provides an add-on for Visual Studio 2005 that allows developers to target the 2007 version of Microsoft Office. “Cypress” will ship simultaneously with the 2007 version of Microsoft Office and will enable developers to immediately target many of the new features. The Microsoft Expression suite of designer tools will enable software designers to collaborate with developers and development teams to visually design and create compelling experiences and then seamlessly port these designs into VS to complete the coding of solutions. For the first time, we’ve now got integrated toolsets that connect the previously separated design and code stages of the development cycle together. Finally, Windows Vista coming this year we will also see new technologies on the client side around the .Net framework and WinFx that will enable developers to create even richer experiences for users within applications. Also we’re announcing at TE that WinFX is being renamed to Net Framework 3.0 and still will include all key technology areas such as WPF, WCF etc 16 © 2004 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
