Deciding on Treatment (Part 1) Type of Issuance: Look at how the bibliographic resource is published, distributed or produced, and if it is updated, how is it updated

Deciding on Treatment Serial vs Integrating Resource Monograph vs Integrating Resource Monograph vs Serial

Deciding on Treatment: Serial vs Integrating Resource Serial: Issued in a succession of discrete parts “ Usually ” bears numbering Intended to continue indefinitely Integrating Resource: Issued with updates that do not remain discrete Updates are integrated into the resource as a whole May be either finite or continuing - Finite: issued once or over a period of time with a predetermined conclusion Continuing: issued over time with no predetermined conclusion

Deciding on Treatment: Monograph vs Integrating Resource Monograph: Remote or direct access resource that is complete in one part or intended to be complete in a finite number of parts Integrating Resource: Catalog as an integrating resource if the resource will be updated. Binder in which pages are added, removed, or replaced until the next edition is published or complete

Deciding on Treatment: Monograph vs Serial Monograph: Frequency of publication - published 3 or more years apart Complete or intended to be complete in a finite number of parts Conference publications not ongoing have distinctive titles which are unique to each issue issued as part of a numbered monographic series Serial: Frequency of publication if frequency is stated published in new editions every one to two years Presence and type of numbering Has numeric, alphabetic, and/or chronological designations If acquired after the first issue, re- catalog as a serial If published in frequent editions, must have designation that could be used as numbering Likelihood of no predetermined conclusion Title proper implies continuing publication: “ Advances in …” ; “ Developments in …” ; “ Progress in …”

Is this a serial, or an integrating resource?

ANSWER: Serial.  Issues are numbered.  Past issues are available for viewing Issues are numbered, “discrete.” Past issues are available for viewing.

Is this a serial, or an integrating resource?

ANSWER:  Integrating resource.  Web site is updated. Is this integrating resource Finite or Continuing?

ANSWER:  Finite.  Web site is updated only until the conference is concluded or after a period of time.  Predetermined conclusion. Note here: “Updates”

Is this a finite loose-leaf resource or a continuing loose-leaf resource?

ANSWER:  Continuing loose-leaf resource.  Updates are integrated into the whole with no pre-determined conclusion.  Becomes a finite integrating resource when a new edition of the base volume is published.

Is this a serial, or an integrating resource?

ANSWER:  Integrating Resource  No discrete parts (no back issues) Note: Don’t let “magazine” fool you.

Is this an updating web site or an updating database?

ANSWER: An updating database. Collection of interrelated data updated in an integrated manner.

Is this a serial, or an integrating resource?

ANSWER:  Integrating Resource  Individual articles are available, but they are not considered “discrete” or numbered.  As the articles become available, they are “integrated” or “posted” to the web site Individual articles are available, but they are not numbered. Articles list posting dates.

Is this a serial or updating web site?

ANSWER:  An updating web site – integrating resource with earlier iterations no longer available as discrete issues  Unlike print version of USA Today which is cataloged as a serial

Is this a serial, or an integrating resource?

ANSWER:  A serial – back issues are available as discrete, numbered issues Note: archives available

Deciding on Treatment (Part 2) Catalog as monographs: books issued in parts (fascicules) cartographic materials censuses encyclopedias hearings publications of five-year plans Catalog as serials: alumni directories college catalogs court reports sales/auction catalogs session laws *If the printed resource isn’t represented by one of the categories above, catalog as a serial.

When to create a new bibliographic record: Major vs. Minor Changes in Title Proper and Bibliographic Description for Serials (AACR2 21.2C) Major changes that involve the title proper: [serials 245 $a and $p; for series 490 $a or 440 $a and $p]

Major changes that involve the title proper A new bibliographic record should be created when: There is an addition, deletion, change, or reordering of any of the first five words (Six if the title begins with an article) Ex: The mining review The mining and industry review There is an addition, deletion or change of any word after the first five words that changes the meaning of the title or indicates a different subject matter Ex: Best bread and breakfasts in the United States Best bread and breakfasts in North America There is a change in a corporate body name given anywhere in the title if the name represents a different corporate body Ex: Reports of the Institute of High Speed Mechanics, Tohoku University Reports of the Institute of Fluid Mechanics, Tohoku University

Major changes – not involving title proper A new bibliographic record should be created when: The main entry (110) changes Ex: R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Annual Report R. J. Reynolds Industries. Annual Report A translated serial undergoes a change in original title There is a change in the corporate body used as a uniform title qualifier Ex: Working paper series (Ohio State University. College of Business) Working paper series (Ohio State University. Fisher College of Business) There is a change in physical format Ex: paper to microfiche; paper to online There is a change in the edition statement where the change indicates a change in subject matter or a change in physical format Ex: North American ed. North American and Central American ed.
