Using G.I.S Mapping For: EFH & ESA Atlantic Salmon. By: Lee Smalls Jr.

Overview Introduction What is G.I.S ? Where is it used? Project Goal How it has contributed to my project. Study Area Project Benefits Methodology Hardware Software Results

Introduction The Summer 2008 Intern, Lee Smalls Jr. has conducted a research project entitled " ESA & EFH using G.I.S Mapping." Throughout this slide show you will find more in depth information about my research as well. Enjoy your visit and feel free to contact me in reference to the project.

What is G.I.S? Geographic Information System (GIS) — A geographic information system (GIS) is a system for capturing, storing, analyzing and managing data and associated attributes which are spatially referenced to the earth. In the strictest sense, it is a computer system capable of integrating, storing, editing, analyzing, sharing, and displaying geographically-referenced information. In a more generic sense, GIS is a tool that allows users to create interactive queries (user created searches), analyze the spatial information, and edit data.

Where is it used? Government Agencies Many government agencies use GIS to help in planning and organizing their geographic data. GIS is not limited to federal use, local and state governments also use GIS to keep track of the properties, public works, roads, and more within their jurisdiction. Emergency Services Many police departments, fire departments and other emergency services have begun to use GIS to help in their daily operations. GIS software can help officials track crime, find the shortest route to emergencies and more. After the events of September 11th GIS has also become a primary technology in Homeland Security

Where is it used…..Cont’d Other Businesses Real estate agents and bankers are using GIS to track properties, property values, and tax information. Health care professionals are using GIS to track the spread of disease and wellness information. Communication technology companies use GIS in planning of their utility expansions. Weather forecasting also uses GIS technologies. A host of other businesses use it for marketing purposes.

Project Goal The objective of the project is to create, populate and deploy a G.I.S-based application that provides a strong foundation for future ESA & EFH development in the States of ME & CT.

How it has contributed to my project. It has been contributed, by allowing me to create, populate and deploy a G.I.S-based Map that provides , ESA & EFH for Atlantic Salmon.

Study Area ESA & EFH River of MA,ME & CT. Located in NOAA Northeast Regional Area of Gloucester, MA.

Project Benefits Streamline EFH Consultation Improve consistency of project review Centralized location for resource information Tool to prioritize project review

Methodology Step 1: I examined the current practices of GIS Services. Step 2: I examined the analog and digital filing system of GIS services. Step 3: Based on the findings of the filing system a G.I.S database was constructed and implemented. Step 4: Quality control of the G.I.S database. Step 5: Implementation of the G.I.S database.

Hardware used Windows based server The Maine Atlas & Gazetteer NER GIS Data

Software Used ArcGIS ArcMap ArcReader Microsoft Access
