PEANUT 2nd RUN proposal Oct. 12, 2006 M. Komatsu

1 st RUN to 2 nd RUN difference We are free from OPERA request –Target structure is free. There are no request from OPERA side anymore. –We can choose optimized target structure for NuMI beam energy. Target structure and wall filling configuration can be optimized for non-bias neutrino interaction study. –We learned many key points from 1 st RUN. Cosmic ray rejection on SS. Exposure density for time stumping.(Nonoyama’s study) Basic tools for analysis are ready (on Spring 2007) –1 st RUN played extremely big role for tool development for both OPERA and future experiments.

Configuration for e measurement OPERA type brick is too thick for low energy e study. Target material and thickness –Larger density but smaller Z is better. Iron would be the first choice. –Maximum 2X 0 would be recommended for location. Careful MC study needed. It is better to avoid showering in target part. Maximum dose –Nonoyama’s study. Non-bias neutrino study is interesting topics. Maximum dose is important for reverse matching from emulsion to SFT to MINOS. EM component analyzer –2 to 3 X 0 thin lead – emulsion ECC is better for few GeV electrons. Also careful MC needed. Possible configuration

2X 0 iron ECC 3X 0 lead ECC 2X 0 iron ECC 70 of 500  m stainless steel plates 73 of 288mm films 56mm, 3.4kg 3X 0 lead ECC 34 of 500  m lead steel plates 37 of 288mm films 28mm, 2.4kg MC study to optimize combination and thickness Single OPERA brick equivalent

Number of events Configuration in previous slide –3x4 x 3wall = 36 targets –2 events / target / day is expected –Then 36 x 2 = 72 events/day. –100 days exposure results 7,200 events. 72 e interactions are expected. More than 100 days exposure results 10% error level e component study can be done.

Summary We can chose best configuration for NuMI 10,000 event level exposure is feasible. –100 electron neutrino Configuration is free now. –We would like to know also your opinions. It is bit hard to start 2 nd RUN before spring –Human resource and analysis platform.
