College of Graduate Studies & Research CGSR Activities: Fall Workshop  Speakers from CGSR, University Secretary’s Office, International Student Office, Library  Large group presentation, small group discussion of policies and case studies, followed by large group – info sharing  Coffee and cookies.

College of Graduate Studies & Research CGSR Activities: Fall Workshop, con’t.  Participants included grad students, grad chairs, dept heads  Positive feedback – useful for understanding the issues  Many participants felt that this workshop (or one like it) should be mandatory

College of Graduate Studies & Research CGSR Activities: Fall Workshop, con’t. Case Study #1 A doctoral student working in a research lab and funded through a national research award of her supervisor fabricated research data to obtain significant positive results. On the basis of these fabricated data, the supervisor and others, including the student, published two papers in prestigious journals.

College of Graduate Studies & Research CGSR Activities: Fall Workshop, con’t. The fabricated data were discovered when another student working on the project failed to replicate the findings. The student, when confronted with the questionable findings, originally denied and then later admitted the deception, and resigned from the academic program and from the research program.

College of Graduate Studies & Research CGSR Activities: Fall Workshop, con’t. Has academic dishonesty occurred? If yes, what type or types of academic dishonesty has occurred? As members of the hearing panel of CGSR, review the information and propose a decision which may or may not include consequences for the student, penalties to the student, and recommendations for instructors and departments.
