4 Expository Paragraph Expository writing is a piece of writing that explains something In expository writing you need details and/or examples to support your main idea. You can organize your examples into categories.

5 Three levels of expository paragraph The expository paragraph has three levels: –A main point presented in the topic sentence –Supporting points which identify categories of examples –Specific examples TOPIC SENTENCE Supporting points Specific Examples

6 Developing an outline Main idea –Supporting Point 1 Details/examples –Supporting Point 2 Details/examples –Supporting Point 3 Details/examples

7 Example Topic Sentence: Many kinds of experiential learning are beneficial to students Category 1: experiential learning in music Category 2: experiential learning in history Category 3: experiential learning in science

8 Giving examples In the above example, the details of the first category (experiential learning in music): –Students can learn about rhythm by beating drumsticks on a table –Students can learn about melody by changing the words of a familiar songs –Student can use computer programs that allow them to compose music

9 Conclusions Expository paragraph explains something It breaks the topic sentence into categories which then breaks into details/examples The outline helps writers to organize their ideas
