Learning Objective: To be able to ask Geographical questions Title: What is the same? What is different? – Comparing places Starter: Look at the photograph below. Come up with five questions you would like answering about this place.

What questions can I ask?  One question you can ask is how places are similar and how they are different.  ITT – Brainstorm things that can be compared between places e.g. population (how many people live there)  A/B pairs – Brainstorm things that can be compared between places  GW – Share your ideas in a group

Look carefully at the following images

Headings to compare places Example of words Relief (shape of the land) Plains, valley, hill Drainage (rivers) Stream, river Climate and weather Hurricane, clouds, rain Vegetation Forest, grassland, crops Population Crowded, migration, multi racial Work Industry, farming, services Recreation and leisure Park, leisure centre, stadium Transport Airport, motorway Adjectives to describe places BigLow wideNarrow RoughGentle LargeSmall SteepHigh SmoothDeep Activity – Compare (similarities) and contrast (differences) the two photographs

What questions can we ask about this scene? How high is this land? How busy is this road? Why are these people attracted here? What are these buildings used for? What is the main type of industry in this area Why is it flat here? What is the population? How do local people earn money? Where is this place? How do people affect this area?

Homework: Comparing places in the world  Look up some statistics to compare some features in the UK with the same features elsewhere in the world e.g.  The highest mountain  The longest river  The biggest city
