Galveston

The Galveston hurricane of 1900 occurred before assigning official code names to tropical storms. Its for this reason that it is often referred to under many different names. The storm has been called the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, The Great Galveston Hurricane, The Galveston flood, and by the Galveston locals it is referred to as The Great Storm or the 1900 Storm.

Wind Speeds The hurricanes winds were estimated of speeds around 135mph when making landfall, making it a category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Loss of Life The loss of life estimates have varied with numbers ranging from 6000 to but the number most cited in official reports is That number gives it the third highest number of casualties of any Atlantic hurricane and also the deadliest natural disaster to ever hit the united states.

Damages The hurricane had brought with it a storm surge of over 15 ft which washed over the entire island. The surge knocked buildings off their foundations and the surf pounded them to pieces. Over 3,600 homes were destroyed and a wall of debris faced the ocean The monetary amount of damages at the time was 20 million, or in today's dollars 516 million.

Warnings Galveston citizens had been made aware of the storm in the papers though it was thought by many that it would not land in Galveston. The Weather Bureau hoisted the storm warning flag in Galveston on September 7th, the day before the storm hit but like today many residents ignored the warnings until it was too late.
