Presentation transcript:

Library Catalog The Feinberg Library Catalog is another example of a database It has records which represent books, videos, CDs, and government documents held at Feinberg Library Each record is likewise broken down into various fields describing the book, such as author, title, subjects headings, and date

Sample Book Record These are all the different fields in the record describing the book This is the call number that tells you where the book is in the Library

These are your search options: author, title, keyword, and subject are the most common. In the Library we call them access points. In business they are called queries or query language. Database Search Options

Demo Author Search Note search must be entered in the order lastname firstname

The first fourteen books are listed on this page. Type a number to see the actual book record. Press next screen or its keymap equivalent to see the rest of the listing. Author Search Results See Next Screen

Subject Heading Search The words: hospitality industry are entered in the search box

A subject search returns a listing of all the subject headings that include the words you typed. Note the words hospitality and industry in all the listings. The only exceptions are BT=broader term, NT=narrower term, and RT=related term. These subjects are related to hospitality industry in these ways. Listing of Subject Headings

You can select which subject headings you want to see. Separate the numbers with commas or use a range such as subject headings 6-12 Selecting Subject Headings

Once you’ve made your subject heading selection the book records will be listed Final result from Subject Search

USE in Subject Headings The Catalog is showing you the correct subject to use here. The search request was for the words: women in management. The catalog is telling us USE: Women executives. Women executives is the correct subject heading.

Use the FIND Function Once your search is complete you can use the Find function to further narrow your results by year.

Why Use the Find Function The Find functions allow you to select a range of publication years For the majority of business research you should use the most recent information Restrict your search to the most recent five- ten years There are a few exceptions to this rule such as historical economic series or historical company research

Results of FIND function The search is narrowed to 13 records

Truncation Symbol Use the * symbol for plurals or word variation.
