Scoping study -detectors Alain Blondel A simulation of the basic detector component is now available and ready for event production. Before to go into the details of the status of the work, we would like to briefly describe the structure of the detector component. It consists of three parts: 1) a target made of emulsion sheets interleaved with either lead or stainless steel; 2) an emulsion spectrometer made of emulsion sheets interleaved with rohacell spacers; 3) shower catcher made of standard ECC. Point 3) is new with respect to our previous presentations and it should provide a good electron identification. The aim of the ongoing simulation is to optimize the dimensions (both longitudinal and transverse) of each part and provide the basic performances (particle ID, momentum and charge identification, detection of the decay topologies, etc.) to be used for neutrino oscillation studies. An important study actually in progress is the calculation of how many neutrino events can be accumulated in a single detector component. This will have a strong impact on the evaluation of the sensitivity of this detector operating at a Neutrino Factory. As far as the inputs for GLOBES is concerned, we do not have any news. Scoping study -detectors Alain Blondel Dear All, I have prepared a simulation of a basic ECC detector in a magnetic field using Geant4. The structure of the detector consists of three parts: 1) a target made of emulsion sheets (ES) interleaved with either lead; 2) an emulsion spectrometer made of emulsion sheets interleaved with Rohacell 31A spacers; 3) shower catcher made of standard ECC. The geometry can be modified from an external file according to the number of cells in each of the three section and to thickness of the passive element. Of course the kinematics of the projectile particle and the magnetic field magnitude can be provided as input. I have also prepared a first event production with no smearing (Monte Carlo truth). An hit is the particle position in the base of an emulsion sheet muon impinging the ECC structure (13 standard ECC + 4 spacers) in 1 Tesla field are available for each of these energies: 1, 2, 3,4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 GeV. Scoping study -detectors Alain Blondel You can download the simulation and the code from In the code there is also a program for reading the simulation output (magneticECC/HitsAnalizer/HitsAnalizer.cc). It has been used for a rough determination of the sign of the charge and a momentum measurement using the sagitta method. The results are in a good agreement with the ones obtained by Komatsu-san. In the near future I will modify the program in order to provide the materials of tha passive elements as an input and to increase linearly the spacer thickness according to the position in the ECC structure.
