Environmental Services Welcomes You to...

Proper Methods for Disposal of Glass Department of Facilities Management Environmental Services Division

Introduction u Proper procedures for disposal of glass items u Safe methods

Agenda u Knowledge of lab users responsibilities u Knowledge of collection procedures u Knowledge of how to dispose of items

Overview u Many of the labs on campus use glass chemical bottles. u Improperly disposed of these bottles can break and become “sharps” and could potentially injure employees.

Overview u In this program, you will learn how, through proper safety techniques, to properly handle the hazard, resulting in a safer environment for our staff and the members of the University community.

Lab Users Responsibilities/Procedures: u Glass - including All Broken Glass: u If Contaminated with radioactive material u · STOP and contact Health Physics at u If Contaminated with biologically infectious material (see details in section VII) u Place glass in autoclave bag and render noninfectious by autoclaving or chemical disinfection. u Place autoclave bag in special containers marked "Certified Non- Biohazardous Materials" which have been placed in autoclave areas u E.H. & S. will pickup these containers and properly dispose of their contents in a special container at the E.H & S. facility. u These containers cannot go into the regular trash dumpsters.

Lab Users Responsibilities/Procedures: u Glass - If Contaminated with acutely hazardous material (EPA "P Listed" Waste) u Remove cap u Remove label or obliterate and mark "Empty" or "MT" u Triple-rinse empty bottles with the appropriate solvent - the rinse accumulated must be collected and marked as hazardous waste. u Place glass directly in a dumpster or in a contained “boxed” glass receptacle - Do Not Place Glass In Trash Cans u Tape close “BOXED” glass and mark as “Trash” and place in trash dumpster at loading dock or next to trash can in laboratories – do not place in hallways. u Questions: contact Hazardous Material/Waste Program for assistance at

Lab Users Responsibilities/Procedures: u Glass - If Contaminated with chemicals other than acutely hazardous/EPA "P Listed" Waste u Remove cap u Remove label or obliterate and mark "Empty" or "MT" u Place glass directly in a dumpster or in a contained “boxed” glass receptacle - Do Not Place Glass In Trash Cans u Tape close “BOXED” glass and mark as “Trash” and place in trash dumpster at loading dock or next to trash can in laboratories – do not place in hallways. u Questions: contact Hazardous Material/Waste Program for assistance at

Lab Users Responsibilities/Procedures: u If Non-Contaminated Glass: u Remove cap u Remove label or obliterate and mark "Empty" or "MT" u Place glass directly in a dumpster or in a contained “boxed” glass receptacle - Do Not Place Glass In Trash Cans u Tape close “BOXED” glass and mark as “Trash” and place in trash dumpster at loading dock or next to trash can in laboratories – do not place in hallways. u Questions: contact Hazardous Material/Waste Program for assistance at

Environmental Services Custodial Staff Responsibilities: u Ensure that you are wearing your safety glasses u Remove taped “Boxed” glass containers marked as “trash” from labs once a week on one of the scheduled service dates. u Gently place boxed glass directly into trash dumpster at loading dock. u Do Not open taped boxes u Do Not Throw boxes into dumpsters

Environmental Services Custodial Staff Responsibilities: u Loose glass bottles or broken glass in trash cans? u Contact your supervisor immediately u Do NOT empty trash can u Supervisor will contact E.H.& S. to report infraction. u Supervisor will contact building proctor to report why trash cans were not emptied.

Where to get more information u Environmental Health & Safety u Facilities Management Environmental Services Training Program u Your Cluster Coordinator
