MINERvA Module Assembly Prototyping Report Jaewon Park University of Rochester MINERvA Collaboration Meeting, July 29-30, 2005

Bob Flight (Engineer) Bob Bradford (Post doc) Jaewon Park (Grad student) Dan Linford (High school student) Zack DeSantis (High school student) People

Mission of Assembly Prototyping was … Develop assembly procedure, manipulation Provides feedback to design  Spacer between OD planes  H-clip (jointing ID and OD) Fiber routing  fibers bending, grouping as bundle, fiber lengths Model with light material (plywood)  Can’t consider mechanical rigidity, weight  Fiber as fishing line, plastic trimmer line, cord for bundle Work Started mid May

Status – PMT box rack PMT box rack is complete First trial of cabling between PMT boxes and top of planar module  Model cable and connector as cord and Velcro  Connection map, Cable length  PMT replacement

PMT Box Rack Before Cabling PMT box PMT box rack Connectors on angle bar

Simple model so easy to make One cord = 8 clear fiber bundle One PMT box has 8 cable inputs  8 x 8 = 64 channels 8 bundles go to one PMT box Clear Fiber Cable Model

Tour of PMT Box Rack PMT box rack for wide module Shows how the cabling looks roughly Video clip (60 sec)

Replacing PMT boxes – method 1 Inclined platform lift Real PMT box will be 2 or 3 times heavier than PVC pipe model we used.  PVC pipe model: 4 lb.  Metal PMT box only: 7 lb. Total: ~11 lb. assuming contents weigh ~ 4lb. Video clip (49 sec)

Replacing PMT boxes – method 2 Use of small shelf to lay down PMT box while (un)plugging cables Video clip (72 sec)

PMT Boxes Numbering FEDCBAFEDCBA A1A2A3 B1B2B3

Connection Map and Cable length Cable Lengths PMT 3-7: 3’6’’ PMT 8-9: 4’ PMT 10-11: 4’8’’ PMT 1-2, 13-14: unknown, those are for OD Connectors PMT boxes PMT 1-2, for OD

Fiber length for wide PMT box rack Sum: x 4 racks = inch = ~18.5 km Approximate uncounted pmt boxes which has portion of 3/ km x 1.3 = ~24 km (This is a rough approximation) Clear Fiber Length

Next Try 128 fibers out VXUXVXUX For half side, 64 fibers = 8 connectors We made connectors only for inner detectors Position of connectors need to be modified We still don’t know cables from OD Now New

Planar Module Models in Progress Primary cuts are done Need to cut grooves, assemble parts, add fibers, etc ½ scale module ¼ scale module

Plan Two high school students leave after first week of August Need feedback from you about fiber routing and PMT box replacement Model fabrication still in progress  Planar module in Aug. and may continue in fall
