John Arthur X-ray October 12, 2004 X-Ray Detector Program Status John Arthur

X-ray October 12, 2004 X-ray detectors for LCLS LCLS presents unique challenges for detectors, requiring significant R&D Signal comes in large pulses (many photons) Pulses come at 120Hz

John Arthur X-ray October 12, 2004 Several types of x-ray detector will be built Beam imaging detector Beam intensity monitor Streak camera 2-d scattered-x-ray detector

John Arthur X-ray October 12, 2004 Beam imaging detector (DESCOPED) Low-resolution, low dynamic range, fast Used primarily for alignment Could be identical to diagnostics camera developed by LLNL Only specification is funded in current plan, no design or procurement Funding could be added (from unused contingency) Backup plan is to use diagnostics camera

John Arthur X-ray October 12, 2004 Beam intensity monitor Very-low-resolution, high dynamic range, fast Used for pulse intensity monitoring/normalization Could be similar to diagnostics camera developed by LLNL

John Arthur X-ray October 12, 2004 Streak camera (DESCOPED) Used for alignment, course time synchronization Only specification is funded in current plan, no design or procurement Funding could be added (from unused contingency) No good backup plan yet

John Arthur X-ray October 12, 2004 LCLS 2-d x-ray detector Many LCLS experiments will produce diffuse scattering patterns Moderate-wide angular range Moderate dynamic range (10 3 ) Low spatial resolution (1k x 1k or less) 120 Hz frame rate 2-d detector needs

John Arthur X-ray October 12, 2004 LCLS 2-d x-ray detector Detector technologies CCD Relatively mature technology Needs R&D to reach 120 Hz Diode pixel array Tremendous potential 120 Hz no problem Not commercial Needs lots of R&D

John Arthur X-ray October 12, 2004 LCLS 2-d x-ray detector LCLS detector R&D plan Begin with 1-year R&D contract (~$140k) to Gruner group at Cornell to investigate pixel array detector After FY05, decide whether and how to continue If OK progress, continue R&D in FY06 Make decision on final procurement prior to FY07 Goal: experiment-ready detector by Backup: CCD detector running at 10 Hz

John Arthur X-ray October 12, 2004 Other LCLS detector efforts The LCLS Endstation Instruments Project (a separate DOE project from the LCLS construction project) will also be funding detector development at the multi-M$ level Detector development within the two LCLS-related projects will be closely coordinated, to maximize development impact and avoid duplication of effort

John Arthur X-ray October 12, 2004 LCLS x-ray detector advisory committee Will provide advice on detector development efforts within both LCLS projects G. Derbyshire, Rutherford Appleton Lab, Chair Y. Amemiya, Tokyo Univ. E. Eikenberry, Swiss Light Source L. Strueder, Max Planck Inst. A.Walenta, Univ. Siegen maybe one more First meeting early 2005

John Arthur X-ray October 12, 2004 LCLS input to detector project Managed by a senior scientist within the Endstation Systems group (to be hired in FY05)

John Arthur X-ray October 12, 2004 Summary LCLS will build several prototype detectors as part of the construction project, useful for alignment and data taking The parallel LCLS Endstation Instrument project will also build/buy detectors for data taking All detector development will be coordinated by SLAC, with advice from the external LCLS x-ray detector advisory committee Some of the desired detector systems are not included in the current project scope
