Extra Control Electronics? Chris Booth Sheffield 27 th November 2008

Chris BoothUniversity of Sheffield 2 Current Status One set of electronics in MICE LCR –Original Veroboard construction –Timer crate no longer required (new readout) One set moved between Sheffield & R78, for testing –PCB construction (with “assistance” from DL!) Extra set would allow two systems (in different places) to be tested together. –Useful for testing different surface treatments –Would allow test of “demonstrator” and “ISIS installation” targets together

Chris BoothUniversity of Sheffield 3 New system – construction possibilities Many problems with previous PCB layouts –Veroboard construction quickest for single extra set –Significant work required for new PCB best left for future, improved controller (as discussed at target control review) –Board construction effort  2 months (Paul S) Also mechanical work for front & back panels –Cutting, drilling, lettering –Costs: ~£800 boards & electronics (inc. optical couplers)  £200 crates & panels ~£600 PC + ~£800 Readout card

Chris BoothUniversity of Sheffield 4 Enhancements Many enhancements proposed in “MICE Target Development” document circulated 16 th July. –For control & monitoring electronics, based on proposal at DL Review, March –Requires more powerful, 16-bit processor Higher processor speed More address lines More functions on single chip CANbus or RS232 for PC communication, I 2 C inter-chip … Considerable development effort required Surface mount device  carrier board on PCB mother board Definitely not feasible before autumn/winter ’09 Interim changes to allow clearer display of target parameters (but not control)? –Not really feasible with present processor Delay time already displayed (in binary – no room in crate to convert) Dip depth not a direct control parameter No free address lines to output switch-point. –Need new design (as above) as soon as possible!
