Good Practices in using IT in Teaching and Learning Preamble and Acknowledgements

Preamble Good Practices in using IT in Teaching and Learning” is the Local Extension Study of the Second International Information Technology in Education Study (SITES), it aims at exploring the ways of using Information Technology to upgrade the quality of teaching and learning in classrooms by Secondary and Primary Schools in Hong Kong, and to study the requirements needed and strategies adopted by the schools when promoting Information Technology-assisted teaching. This research is undertaken by the Centre for Information technology in School and Teacher Education of the University of Hong Kong and funded by the Hong Kong Quality Education Fund. The set of staff development materials is printed and published by the Hong Kong Education Department. In the past several months, we had visited nineteen secondary and primary schools, and have observed more than forty lessons which has applied Information Technology in their teaching processes. We preliminarily concluded some experiences and research results and we have included some good practices of these lessons in a set of two CDROMs. The CDROMs consist of more than ten lesson cases, covering a wide range of subjects including Chinese, English, Mathematics, Art, Music, Geography, Government and Public Affairs, Physics, Chemistry, etc. for the reference of all education sector fellows.

Preamble All related lessons are able to improve the efficiency of teaching and learning and enhance the interests of students in learning by applying Information Technology in varied ways. We are so grateful to observe the significant changes in the roles of teachers and students from the cases, in which students are playing a leading role in the learning process, this enables more diversified interactions between teachers and students. I should show my sincere gratitude to principals and teachers who have offered their generous help and who kindly show their willingness in sharing the extracts of their lessons to the public. There are numerous good practices of using information technology in lessons in schools in Hong Kong, however, because of limited space, we could only adopt few cases as examples. We expect to encourage education sector fellows to actively participate in promoting the application of Information Technology in education, to provide high-quality education to students, and to open up the new educational perspective for the new millenium.
