PALM-3000 Management Update A. Bouchez, J. Roberts Team Meeting #15 10/29/09
PALM Why are we building this again? Take a look at the recent NSF ATI proposal
PALM Since the last team meeting We are now 2/3 of way through the project (in terms of budget…further in terms of schedule!) Changes since last meeting First light move back to February 2011, with the system tear-down and rebuild beginning in July 2010 All component designs are complete. All PDRs have been held. External interim cost review was held in February
PALM Management Status The biggest concerns are the completion funding and staying on schedule Funding –FY10 funding is secure at both JPL and Caltech –JPL MOU report strongly recommended funding the MOU for another 5 years and specifically funding AO in FY10 and FY11 JPL has funded AO for FY10 –NSF ATI proposal to be submitted by Monday. Would cover 100% of COO FY11-12 funding, and 50% of JPL FY11. Schedule –Due to funding concerns, we must push to meet the schedule Control of requirements creep will be important Identify especially challenging requirements and discuss with management before spending months working on them
PALM-3000 External Review External Interim Project Review – February 2009 –Review of the management plan, scientific competitiveness and cost to completion –From review committee report: “The committee was impressed with the management and commitment of the PALM-3000 team.” “The past experience of the team in deploying the existing Palomar AO system gives us confidence that they can achieve the ambitious goals of the system.” –Only significant technical concern was the actuator deformable mirror (DM) delivery, which we have addressed
PALM FY10 effort distribution
PALM FY10 effort distribution COO Personnel Baranec - 5% Bouchez - 80% Bui - 25% Croner - 50% Dekany - 15% Hale - 50% Zolkower - 15% Palomar - 25% FTE
PALM FY10 Schedule Issues Critical Path(s) High-order deformable mirror procurement and testing Software development –High Order Wavefront Processor Electronics assembly and testing –Especially DM & motor cabling. Strategies Will need to track progress on these particular tasks closely. Management needs to clearly spell out when subsystems must be ready for integration into the testbed & final system. Team must inform us when unexpected problems arise.
