Dr. Liz Thach Professor of Management & Wine Business, School of Business & Economics Wine Business Institute WebCT Experience Have taught complete course on WebCT Also use to post assignments, handouts Moodle Something new; Better platform Course Bus 344 – two sections

 Moodle summer course helpful  Designed hybrid course: 1 day face to face; one day Moodle  What I like about Moodle:  More sophisticated tools, e.g. CHOICE, GLOSSARY  Much faster and easier to read and grade assignments  Amazing ability to run reports to see exactly who did and didn’t do assignments  Student photos and bios  Better grade book feature  Nicer aesthetics

 No issues with student’s transitioning to Moodle who had already used WEBCT.  Students said they enjoyed hybrid model.  Conducted student satisfaction poll on Moodle with positive results

 Fall 2009  Bus 344.3, Organizational Behavior (37 students)  Bus 344.4, Organizational Behavior (48 students)  Spring 2010  Bus 344.1, Organizational Behavior (123 students)  Bus 305W, Intro. To Wine Business (48 students)

 After teaching on both WebCT and Moodle at the same time last semester, I can truly say that Moodle is much easier to use – and offers many more sophisticated tools.

Introduction  Pat Jackson, Criminology & Criminal Justice Studies  Moodle supported my upper division seminar, a core requirement of the Criminology & Criminal Justice Studies (CCJS), CCJS 420, Seminar in CCJS

My Experience Building in Moodle  I found it helpful to install Moodle on my computer.  It worked well with Word, Excel, images, etc. in a mostly Mac environment  Did not work with Safari

My Experience Building in Moodle  It was easy to reproduce my class on Moodle, by week. It’s cut and paste.  The fun stuff:  Making web pages/links, etc. on the fly  Posting pdfs, text docs, etc. instead of eReserve or other  Creating a forum  Quickmail from Moodle

My Students’ Experience  Moodle was easy to navigate, download and print from  Some students don’t care for technology and prefer to deal in paper  Our brick and mortar seminar was served well by Moodle

My Students’ Experience  Main things students did with Moodle:  Learned latest happenings and downloaded materials: assignments, readings & took links  Contributed to a glossary  Introduce themselves to others using a forum

My Students’ Experience  Result:  A couple of interesting discussions  Instigated discussion in the classroom about how writing something online is always nerve-wracking because of how it might be used how interesting some criminologists are and how current and past interests in crime haven’t changed much

Quick Glance at My Course  CSU Pilot Moodle courses CSU Pilot Moodle courses  CCJS 420 CCJS 420

Summary of My Experience with Moodle  A hybrid class Hid backstage construction work from audience Organized assignments, readings and web links Allowed monitoring of student usage of all pages and activities  Did not:  Use Moodle for grading or testing  Try collaborative online learning

Quick Glance at My Course  ?id=1947&course=276 ?id=1947&course=276

Summary of My Experience with Moodle  Happy with Moodle  Lots of work to transition but CSU Moodle Coalition will help  We have a year so it’s doable  End product will be worth the energy up front.
