What are OSHA and ANSI? OSHA: Occupational Safety & Health Administration GET TO KNOW OSHA, it will be a thorn in your side ‘til the day you retire! NEW YORK is REGION 2, NY, NJ, PR, US VI –Assures the safety and health of America’s workers by: Setting and Enforcing Standards Provide Training, Outreach, and Education Encouraging Continual Improvements in the Workplace ANSI: American National Standards Institute –U.S. private sector, nonprofit, coordinating a voluntary standardization system –Official U.S. representative to the ISO (International Organization of Standardization) and other groups –All PPE worn in the US must meet their standard

Hazard Communication NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) Placard System Understand that if you see a box or container with a placard on it and don’t know what it is….. LEAVE IT ALONE!!!

Clothing Do NOT Wear: –Jewelry (including watches) –Open toe shoes –Good “Sunday” clothing –Contact Lenses –If you question something, don’t wear it. –USE COMMON SENSE

Clothing DO Wear: –Old clothes that you do not care about –Personal Protective Equipment Including proper footwear –Tie back Hair –Eye Glasses –Be prepared to get DIRTY and to WORK It is not fair to show up and stand around and do nothing or talk – if you are not going to work get OUT OF THE WORK ZONE- you are a distraction!

Tools Power and Manual Tools: –If you have never used it, don’t start now –Everyone has different experiences (some with many years of construction some with none. Or get properly trained first by someone that does NO ONE WILL LAUGH AT YOU –Check the tool to make sure it is not broken Alert safety officer immediately –NO ONE WILL YELL AT YOU – –SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY TO OTHER PEOPLE Note what is wrong –Check that all safety mechanisms are in place Alert safety officer immediately –TOOL MUST BE REPLACED –SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY TO OTHER PEOPLE Note what is missing –Wear all required PPE –Be aware of others around you

RECORD any INJURIES – we need to know this I want a NYCOM student to help out PPE basic rules include: Use the right PPE for the job. Inspect PPE for damage before and after use. Penalties NREL considers safety a TOP priority –Consider this as practice for the real thing in Washington –Signs will be posted to remind you to wear your PPE, FOLLOW THEM –NREL Will kick us right off the national lawn –RECORD any INJURIES – we need to know this You or your guests will be asked to leave if you are not wearing your PPE correctly after 2 warnings You or your guests will be asked to leave immediately if you are dressed inappropriately You or your guests will be asked to leave immediately if you are behaving in a distracting manor – this is how accidents occur!
