Presentation transcript:

System Needs for Fast Location Aware Application Development Spatial Group Meeting 4/1/ shashi-group/

Location Aware Applications GeoAwareness: by adding location information to awareness systems we enable people to interact in new, unexpected ways. GeoTemporal matching: matching individuals’ geotemporal routines can identify common ground that is useful in building stronger personal connections. GeoTemporal messaging: we can enable people to leave messages in space and time, creating new interaction opportunities.

Demo: Location Tracking(1)

Demo: Location Tracking(2)

LBS Solution Navigation Systems: A Spatial Database Perspective, Shekhar, etc, 2003

What LAA Brought Us Lets keep tracking where all my 40,000 fellow U of M students are every second! DBA: your moving objects are hogging all of my disk space! DBA: Your queries are bringing down my DB! Make an appointment with me … I will beep you my calendar Dinner at Mom’s house tonight “Pancake breakfast at girlfriend’s Girls’ Scouts Reunion tomorrow morning” (That 70s Show)

What LAA Brought Us Privacy in the Age of Ubiquitous Computing, Jason Hong, 2003 Flood of Location-Based Spam Never Hide From Friends and Co-Workers Constant Surveillance Never Get Lost You walk past a restaurant and your cellphone rings with the specials of the day Find Friends “[It] could tell when you were in the bathroom, when you left the unit, and how long and where you ate your lunch. EXACTLY what you are afraid of” Emergency Response “I don’t see how a government or an organization will not come up with an excuse to use [location info] for another purpose”

Moving Objects Storage Indexing Query Classic database problems!

From Position To Place Predicting places from maps and behavior Find candidates to label as places through people behavior and other entities Labeling places Automatically label places by inferring people’s activities in those places. Jeffrey Hightower, Workshop on Location-aware Computing 2003

Privacy The problem, while often couched in terms of privacy, is really one of control. If the computational system is invisible as well as extensive, it becomes hard to know: what is controlling what what is connected to what where information is flowing how it is being used what is broken (vs what is working correctly)” The Origins of Ubiquitous Computing Research at PARC in the Late 1980s Weiser, Gold, Brown

Proposed Components Moving object management Spatial reasoning Semantic place modeling Privacy tool
