ILC R&D at SCIPP: Progress Report De-scoped ($97.5K) Proposal Activities Radiation Hardness for BeamCal sensors (new; with SLAC) KPiX/Double Metal Performance LSTFE-2 Characterization Simulations Studies Close-out Charge Division, Generic Readout Noise studies

Project involves many students… Graduate (first year; University support): Omar Moreno Undergraduate: Alex Bogert, Jerome Carman (Albuquerque presentation), Kelsey Collier, Dale Owens, Jared Newmiller (Engineering), Sheena Schier, Matt Stanton, Aaron Taylor High School: Capella Yee (JAS/Root up and running on her computer; preparing to contribute to tracking efficiency studies)

Beam-Cal Progress Primarily, research into studies that can most effectively inform the BeamCal sensor choice: Decision to test standard float-zone, Czochralski, and possibly epitaxial silicon sensors (oxygenated float-zone not thought to be promising or practical) Coming up to speed on NIEL (non-ionization energy-loss) framework. Collecting information on expected rates and spectra of various background components Beginning to work with SLAC to develop concrete test-run plan Initiated and maintaining contact with Wolfgang Lohman (DESY Zeuthen), BeamCal leader. Will present outline of plan at BeamCal meeting in March

KPiX/Double-Metal Activity Characterization of double-metal sensors Un-loaded KPiX characterization; results soon from incorporation of KPiX characteristics into pulse-development simulation Prototype hardware development: development of KPiX/Double-Metal prototype assembly for performance studies. Working on delicate bonding procedure with Hesse-Knipps USA.

LSTFE-II 128-channel functionality confirmed, including digital architecture (multiplexing time-over-threshold readout) Power cycling not working, but failure is in standard “analolg memory” component; test structure designed and submitted (parasitically) Remaining characterization work getting underway FPGA-based DAQ system being upgraded to incorporated de- multiplexing.

Simulation Studies Momentum reconstruction: Comparisons between error matrix, Billior calculation, and residuals show SiD02 momentum reconstruction has room to improve Non-Prompt Tracking: Have generated signal file for (several technical issues solved with SLAC) and are optimizing kink-finding algorithm. Stau Decay Length (mm)

Long-ladder noise: Observation vs. Expectation using the CDF Layer-00 Sensor read out by the LSTFE ASIC Strip noise should dominate after ~5 sensor lengths Spieler expectation; including all shaping effects NOTE: “Center-Tapping” provides ~25% reduction in noise. Collier developing PSpice simulation to understand effects. Measured noise “Center-tapped” measured noise

Charge Division: Results from PSpice simulation bench-marked by Network/Aplification mock-up; 6mm longitudinal resolution expected for SiD-like system (Jerome Carman)

Summary BeamCal End of calendar year: plans and preparations Testbeam: next calendar year KPix/Double-Metal Unloaded KPiX bench-tests producing results Double-Metal assembly presenting challenges Expect results end of calendar year; perhaps sooner LSTFE-II Not quite there with power-cycling, but getting close. Characterization underway through end of year No funds for next submission (power cycling, optimization for forward tracking) Simulation Studies Basic studies (efficiency, resolution) continue SiD non-prompt tracking results should be on the way (calendar year) Readout Noise, Charge Division Nearing completion; publication by end of calendar year
