Technology curriculum In K-3 classrooms should build on: –Children’s interests in making things –Figuring out how things work –Using tools to help accomplish tasks

Improper use of computers in the classroom Computers are used as “extra” –Computers are not linked to the curriculum Computer games are being used as rewards Overuse of drill and practice software

Proper use of computers in the classroom Are making learning activities on the computer supporting the lessons Are making sure that children in the classroom are involved with a variety of activities that have personal meaning and educational value Children are improving in many subject areas also learning about computers, as well as their capabilities and limitations

When students use computers as a tool They collect, organize, and analyze data They enhance presentations They conduct simulations They also solve complex problems

Computers have a positive effect Schools will become more student-centered with the use of computers More individualized learning will take place Computers will collaborate all subject areas It helps teachers improve the curriculum and enhances student learning Students are able to use a variety of tools in order to gather information and solve problems

The need for teacher guidance Teachers need to develop their skills and comfort level with computers Be familiar with the software information they ask the children to use Make sure not to overuse computers which could take away from hands on experiences

Examples of appropriate uses of computers They can support the writing process –Children can use simple word processors to draft, write, and revise stories Allows them to be creative –They can create individual artworks Provides rich problem solving environments Computers are a tool for communication and collaboration Computers allow children to access information

Our opinion We feel that computers provide a positive environment when used properly Computers are fun as well as educational –They easily keep children’s attention Computers help to make teachers lives easier –For example, they can create a database of their students
