Foreign Language Learning Construction level: learn new words, grammar rules, and get skills. Performance level: communication.

Foreign Language Learning Skill-getting: Skill-using: Cognition (knowledge) Production (pseudo-communication) Interaction (real communication)

They appear to learn a foreign language in the same way as they did their mother tongue, which means they develop their own knowledge of language system from getting familiar with the currently favored explanation of language learning process.

Paraphrasing No analogy should be pushed too far. We can ’ t use an analogy of language learning and trying out a vehicle to an unreasonable extent.

Paraphrasing Confident self-expression is possible even at a very early stage. It ’ s possible for students to express true feelings or opinions with complete confidence in using the new language at a very early stage.

Paraphrasing A prolific area of psychological study. There is yet a lot to explore in the psychology of human interaction.

Paraphrasing This is a period of plurality of objectives and diversity of learning approaches. This is an era of many learning purposes and diverse learning methods.

Paraphrasing They must learn to teach in such a way that they do not interpose themselves between the learner and what is to be learned. Teachers should allow learners some autonomy in choosing material and learning styles.

Auditory Person vs. Visual Person Auditory person: an eloquent speaker, talk to themselves while working, enjoy reading aloud and listening, better at telling than writing, remember what was discussed rather than seen, like music more than art. Visual person: observant, see words in their mind, remember more of what was seen than heard, would rather read than be read to, doodle during phone conversations and meetings, like art more than music, remember words by writing down, forget to relay verbal messages to others.

Discussion Topics 1.Do you agree that only if teachers and students reveal themselves to each other can they build a rapport? Why or why not? 2. What kind of teachers do you think are the least helpful and frustrating in classroom teaching? 4. What you hope will be your best memories of your college years?

Translation 1 1. 这段旅程通常需要两周,但你必须把坏天 气造成的延误也考虑进去。 The trip usually takes two weeks, but you must allow for the delay caused by bad weather. 2. 他不应该干预医生对病人的临床诊断。 He shouldn ’ t interpose himself between the clinical judgment of the doctor and the patient.
