Lesson 5.7- Statistics: Scatter Plots and Lines of Fit, pg. 298 Objectives: To interpret points on a scatter plot. To write equations for lines of fit.
Vocabulary Scatter plot: a graph in which two sets of data are plotted as ordered pairs in a coordinate plane. Positive correlation: as x increases, y increases. y x
Negative correlation: as x increases, y decreases. y x
No correlation: there is no relationship between x and y. y x If the pattern in a scatter plot is linear, you can draw a line to summarize the data.
Line of fit: a line that describes the trend of the data in a scatter plot. Best-fit line: the line that most closely approximates the data in a scatter plot.
a) Draw a scatter plot and determine what relationship exists, if any, in the data. b) Draw a line of fit for the scatter plot. c) Write the slope-intercept form of an equation for the line of fit. d) Predict the body temp of an insect if the air temperature is 40.2 °F Air Body Temperature (°C) Air Temperature (°C) Body Temperature (°C)
