SCIGN REASoN CAN Update Frank Webb September 19, 2004

June 13, 2015 SCIGN REASoN Project 2 Current Team Yehuda Bock (SIO) Ruey-Juin Chang (SIO) Danan Dong (SIO) Peng Fang (SIO) Jeff Genrich (SIO) Paul Jamason (SIO) Sharon Kedar (JPL) Nancy King (USGS) David Malveaux (SIO) Brian Newport (JPL) Sue Owen (JPL) Linette Prawirodirdjo (SIO) Michael Scharber (SIO) Keith Stark (USGS) Frank Webb (JPL)

June 13, 2015 SCIGN REASoN Project 3 REASoN Goals Status –Architecture –Interim Milestones for rest of Year (July 2005) –Combination –GPS Explorer

June 13, 2015 SCIGN REASoN Project 4 SCIGN REASoN Goals Generate higher level products from SCIGN data for use by the SCIGN community Apply modern IT methodology within SCIGN to: –Produce and disseminate higher-level data products to a larger community of Scientists Government agencies (Federal, State, and Local) Surveyors GIS professionals Build on current capabilities within SCIGN for data archiving, information systems, and data analysis to disseminate the following products: –Geodetic position time series –Crustal motion models –Strain rate maps –Geologic fault models –Near-real-time earthquake response information –Geodetic reference systems for precise GIS and surveying Improve capabilities in –Archiving –End-user interfaces –Delivery mechanisms –Data modeling Open source project based on a redundant, multi-tiered “Virtual Archive” for GPS applications.

June 13, 2015 SCIGN REASoN Project 5 High Level Requirements Needs Products are “scientific publication” quality –Verified, validated, and reference able Processing centers and processes use the same input data Goals All processing retrieves data from a common source Products are quantified, reproducible, and based on verified and validated data and established processes Web distribution of products contains complete information on product generation Objectives Employ Seamless Archive Interface through Web services Pull data at time of analysis Push results into archive Pull products from archive for distribution Provide full accounting of product Provide tools/recipes for product reproduction Provide On-demand analysis

June 13, 2015 SCIGN REASoN Project 6 Status Architecture –Framework is defined based on web services –Interfaces are being defined, developed, and documented on the web Combination –Validated QOCA against GLOBK Found several quantitative and reasoning issues –SIO and JPL solutions are being combined with QOCA –Producing web products using interim interfaces on a weekly basis GPS Explorer –Prototype web portal for exploring GPS data products –Combined products being posted on web on a weekly basis Interim Milestones –Combination based on prototype web services by SCIGN annual meeting in Spring 2005 –Combined products based on web services by July 2005

June 13, 2015 SCIGN REASoN Project 7 SCIGN REASoN CyberInfrastructure Structured around Four systems –Product Input Seamless Archive a community based system Via web services –GPS Data Processing Verified and validated products using 2 independent systems GAMIT and GIPSY –Product Generation Based on award winning QOCA software –Product Delivery Via Virtual Archive With web services –Meta data –Products Extensible to EarthScope Needs for High Level Product Generation and Distribution for –PBO –SAFOD –USArray While project was endorsed by UNAVCO and product levels were adopted by PBO, there currently are no official connections with EarthScope.

June 13, 2015 SCIGN REASoN Project 8 High Level Architecture

June 13, 2015 SCIGN REASoN Project 9 High Level Architecture

June 13, 2015 SCIGN REASoN Project 10 Combination Our philosophy –The conventional combination approach simply aligns several loosely constrained solutions to a predefined reference system using 7-parameter Helmet transformation. – A more rigorous combination approach should consider both the systematic differences and random errors. –We are pursuing such a more rigorous approach. Current progress in our combination process: –Validate process against GLOBK v 5.06 and v 5.08 –ST filter development –Automated combination generation every week using interim web interfaces –Solution quality report development –Some open issues to be addressed by SCIGN Annual Meeting

June 13, 2015 SCIGN REASoN Project 11 Combination Based on QOCA software – Technique validated against GLOBK Issues found –Pole tide correctionGAMIT uses absolute pole position. Whileseveral mm GIPSY uses de-mean pole position. GLOBK V 5.06 has no correction. V 5.08 performs backward de-mean pole correction. –Network constraintGLOBK v 5.06 has a bug, v 5.08 has correctedsub-mm to 1 mm weighting such a bug. Bug: var_tot = var_tot + cov_parm(jel,jel)**2 Should be: var_tot = var_tot + cov_parm(jel,jel) –Network constraint GLOBK v 5.08 adds a new criterion based on 2-3 mm sometimes outlier criterion horizontal postfit sigmas. GIPSY uses different outlier criteria. QOCA tries to match GLOBK v 5.08 criteria first and modifies it later. –Geodetic datumGLOBK, GAMIT use flatness 1/ mm level (NAD83). GIPSY uses 1/ (IERS89). QOCA uses 1/ (WGS84). –Network constraintGLORG has a bug of calculating median value of3-5 mm or up median value postfit residuals –Network constraintGLORG criterion for horizontal postfit residual3-5 mm or u delete site criterion has some inconsistency, will be modified in QOCA.

June 13, 2015 SCIGN REASoN Project 12 Combination Status Producing web products using interim interfaces on a weekly basis Products extend back to 6 months and counting Available at – Open issues to be addressed by SCIGN Annual Meeting 2005 –Reference frame –Relative weighting –Quality assurance strategy –Desired latency for products –Sub-network strategy –Regional filtering strategy

June 13, 2015 SCIGN REASoN Project 13 GPS Explorer The web portal for accessing SCIGN products Documents REASoN project including –Overall project description –Interface definitions Provides access to SCIGN Products –Combined solution Graphical representation of combined time series and network performance metrics Combined solution based on –SIO and JPL solutions –Combined using QOCA Currently, uses interim interfaces to update products weekly User Forum – UBB software
