INREM Need identified for a national picture of drowning and accidents on inland waters INREM project started 2001 on agreement with National Water Safety Committee and managed jointly by RNLI and RoSPA as a research PhD with Birmingham University

INREM Project Overview Phase 1 – Feasibility Study Phase 2 – Development Phase 3 – Implementation

Feasibility Investigated selected areas of UK for:– –Inland water ownership –Safety provision –Data collection Initial report made

Established INREM working group who: –Agreed agencies necessary to input data –Agreed core minimum data set –Agreed definitions of inland water –Established requirements for data input and output Development

Implementation IT sub-group established IT solutions based on best value/best practice investigated On-line form for data input developed Web front end to collect data developed Data hosted and output from RNLI business systems to web front end

What can INREM do? Gives a multi-agency nationwide rich picture of inland water incidents Management reports to assist operational planning and prevention strategies:- –Annual drowning stats; Operational resource applied; Equipment used; Types of casualty and incident

SEAREM

Purpose “ To provide a central point from which information from the RNLI, IRCG, DASA and the MCA is collected, providing a nationwide picture of incidents at sea and used to ensure effective use of search and rescue assets, analysis of trends, identification of problem areas and to legislation and promote water safety initiatives”

SEAREM 1997 saw the creation of the SEAREM (SEA Related Emergency Monitoring database) and since then nearly 80 thousand incidents have been recorded. The RNLI, MCA, IRCG and DASA all contribute to SEAREM.

Data – SEAREM input Data input from agencies direct to RNLI business systems Verification of data using automated checks Processing of data Final input to SEAREM database

Data – SEAREM output Database interrogated on-line by user agencies Management reports downloaded by users Individual agencies generate own user information for operational decision making and prevention strategies
