University Nanosat Program Overview OBJECTIVES – Future Workforce Training Through a National Student Satellite Design and Fabrication Competition – Development of the Small Satellite Technology Area, Including Subsystems Development and Standard Deployment Systems with Rapid Launch Capability at Low Cost DESCRIPTION – Satellite Design and Fabrication Competition to be Sponsored by AIAA (Recurring 2 Year Cycle) – Winner of the Competition is Flown on the Space Shuttle – AFRL/VS / STP will Develop a Second Generation Small Satellite Launch Adapter which Provides Significant Safety Related Protections – AFRL/VS / NASA GSFC will Develop a Suite of Standard Nanosat Components (Bus, Power, Comm, Etc.) – NASA GSFC will Provide Design and Safety Related Guidance to the Participating Universities – AFOSR to Provide Nominal Funding to US Universities to Participate in the Competition Experiment Location

User’s Guide Design Competition Universities have 2 years to design, build, and test an engineering design unit (EDU) Nanosatellite. – Design/Build/Test Phase begins at the Kickoff Meeting, Feb 03. – Design/Build/Test Phase ends at the Flight Competition Review, in Jan 05. – The winner will be selected at the Flight Competition Review. – The competition winner will be integrated with AFRL and STP deployment systems and launched on the Shuttle. – 2 nd and 3 rd place awards will be provided (Awards TBD).

User’s Guide Design Competition Evaluation Criteria – Student Participation (45 points) Educational Outreach to Students in Grades K-12. Participation at Program Milestone Events. Involvement of students from various disciplines, undergraduate and graduate. Student involvement at all levels: Management, Design, Test, Assembly. – Technical Relevance (35 points) Relevance to the Air Force and NASA. See User’s Guide Appendix A. – Flyability (20 points) Mission Success and Safety. Competition Final Deliverable Items – EDU, Design Drawings, Reports, Frequency Allocation Paperwork.

User’s Guide Deployment Concept The baseline is a Shuttle Launch using the STP Canister for all Payload Ejections (CAPE) Deployment System. The Nanosat will be mounted inside the AFRL Internal Cargo Unit (ICU). The ICU/Nanosat is installed inside the CAPE canister. The ICU/Nanosat is ejected from CAPE on orbit. The ICU halves separate, and the Nanosat is released.
