LIKE A VIRGIN&INTO THE GROOVE Structure Performance Style (visual) Conventions Representation Goodwin PM critics
Structure- The videos are both montage with no structure to narrative in the video, this can be considered eclectic in the way that it was put together in ‘in the groove’ Using range of filming techniques for the video and in ‘like a virgin’ uses random themes and connotations like lions and a bride theme.
Style- The visual style of Madonna's like a virgin reflects the filming style used in many budget music videos from the 80’s era; dissolves and cross-fades of clip is heavily used in the music video, this is also done to match the tempo of the song. The filming style from ‘like a virgin’ has changed as Madonna changes her music style more to dance pop in later years as faster paced cuts are more frequent in her video to reflect her music. This is apparent in the music video ‘into the groove’ more money has also gone into the production as we have more editing effects and splicing in the video.
PM conventions - In relation to postmodernism intertextuality in particular is used in ‘into the groove’ as the video consists of clips from the movie ‘desperately finding Susan' and the illumanati emblem can been seen on the back of Madonna's jacket in the video. A sense of narcissism can be noted in ‘into the groove’ as Madonna appears within a pencil heart shape she is seen drawing earlier in the video.
Representation- the representation Madonna portrays in ‘like a virgin’ conforms to the stereotype female, being innocent, dependable on the man waiting on him and carried in his arms. This differs in ‘into the groove’ Madonna represents herself in a feminist fashion such as subverting the typical female role such as approaching the men in clubs and leading them on.
Goodwin -‘like a virgin’ and ‘into the groove’ both conforms to Goodwin's theory as the visuals link to the lyrics of the song at several occasions e.g. in ‘like a virgin’, Madonna appears as a bride relating back to preserving her virginity till marriage etc. in addition to Goodwin's theory Close ups are used frequently on the recording artist in both videos promoting the song and image. Voyeurism can be noted ‘in into the groove’ as we see people looking through cameras, stalking and watching a cinema screens within the video.
PM Critics- into the groove links to lytords theory of meta-narrative as the video features themes to tell the text within it we see Madonna in her video interacting with clips from the film ‘desperately finding susan’.
