Data-gov Demos Jim Hendler, Li Ding and Deborah L. Demos Linking US–UK Gov Data

This application presents a mashup of foreign aid data (represented in US Dollars) from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and UK Department for International Development (DFID) for the 2007 US Fiscal Year. Users may retrieve foreign aid data for specific countries by clicking on a provided world map (shaded based on total combined contributions for USAID and DFID). Upon clicking on a desired country, three kinds of information are presented: Aid Figures, New York Times news, and wikipedia description.

This demo uses data from Dataset 311 on crime in the United States, census.gov and UK recorded crime. It shows available information on crimes in cities grouped by US countries and UK Territorial Police area.Dataset 311 on crime in the United Statescensus.govUK recorded crime

Demos on Daily Life Data

For this demo, we used RDF data derived from on ozone and visibility readings provided by the EPA's Castnet project. This RDF combines raw data on Castnet readings (ozone and visibility) with corresponding geographic information on the sites of readings, which the raw Castnet data lacks. On the provided map of the US, every yellow dot represents a single Casetnet site and dot size corresponds to an average Ozone reading for that site, where larger dots represent larger averages. When a Castnet site is clicked, a small pop-up opens, displaying more information on that site, along with a link. This link takes the user to another page that displays in a timeline all the Ozone and Visibility data available for that site. This timeline uses the Google Visualization API giving users added functionality in how they view the data in the timeline. To allow users to filter through Castnet readings, a faceted browsing interface (from the MIT Simile Exhibit API) is provided.

US government is spending billions of dollars on fighting with Wildland Fire, and this demos show their correlations. Recently the budget has grown to billions of dollars. This map shows a comparison between the amount of adjusted gross income earned by state residents and the number of Medicare claims made within that state by residents in

States with a yellow hue indicate where a greater percentage of rural households have broadband internet access than urban households. States with a blue hue indicate where a greater percentage of urban households have broadband internet access than rural households. This demo was created using Processing software package to show internet usage/poverty per state, and twitter message population per state. So the more red a state is, the higher its poverty rate is. The more green a state is, the more money is being spent in that state for broadband access. The more blue a state is, the higher the internet access that state has.

This demo presents associations between various kinds information on public libraries (e.g., total visitors, total books) from New York, California, Michigan, Ohio, Florida, Texas and Illinois.

This demo displays the number of book volumes per available per state, aggregated over all public libraries. A geographic map of earthquakes around the world within the past seven days (magnitude > 5).

This demo generates an intensity map of earthquakes worldwide for the past week, leveraging information on latitude, longitude, magnitude, and location name. An earthquake map generated by SparqlProxy (filtering RDF data) and yahoo pipes (Rendering Map) info?_id=5f54b30d36a9eacff1a88 669ca03aaa8

This demo allows a user to search for different kinds of public safety information, ranging from crime to medical events. The results are displayed in a faceted map, allowing the user to filter by subcategories, date, time, etc. It is possible to select the source of information, from Troy Police Department and RPI Public Safety department. This demo compare two datasets that contains population information for US states, and the difference was shown on map as well as in column chart.

Household energy usage statistics. Energy usage (by energy type) of US government agencies.

Comparing Smoking Quit Rates to Unemployment, Tax, and Violent Crimes This demo aims at showing how existing tobacco survey data can be linked to other open government data in unexpected way.

Demos on Budget and Spending

This demo uses Dataset 403 (Public Budget Database - Governmental receipts ). Two accounts in "government receipts" were plotted side by side on a timeline. One observation on the simple graphics is that personal income tax is much larger than Corporate income tax http://data-gov.tw.rpi.edu/demo/static/demo-403-income2.html The visualization easily enables people to monitor the overall sum of money that a agency has spent over time, but it also shows how the money within that agency has been allocated over the years. For example, we can see that the National Science Foundation has seen increased funding over time (though less so between 2004 and 2008), but also that, while their main focus is research, since the 90's they have also increased spending on education and human resources.National Science Foundationincreased funding over time

This demo allow users to compare aggregated budget for two government agencies. Here, we can see that National Institutes of Health has faster budget growth than National Science Foundation.National Institutes of HealthNational Science Foundation This demo refines the demo above by (i) listing all accounts of the agency; (ii) annotate the timeline with news from New York Times.

This demo shows the US Postal Service's financial history by: (i) plotting net income (income - expenses), budget authority (money allocated by Congress) and outlays (actual expenses) on a timeline (ranging from 1976 to 2008), and (ii) annotating the timeline with historical events, dynamically loaded from an RSS feed of articles on this wiki.RSS feed

This demo was created using Flare stackAreaLayout technology on budget outlay data, This uses SPARQL to combine data from dataset 401, dataset 402, dataset 401 and dataset 92 which show the budget authority (money allocated by Congress), outlays (actual expenses), recipient by various government accounts from 1976 to 2014, respectively (values from the present to 2014 are projected). This visualization shows budget authority and outlays for the selected agency, with each line labeled according to its source data file.dataset 401dataset 402dataset 401dataset 92

Map show how much total funding each state has received. Clicking on a state will give you a map of the top 30 grants for the state.

Demos for Decision Support

This demo integrates basic biographic information about justices of U.S. Supreme Court with their voting records from 1953 to 2008, trying to look into justices' decision preferences from multiple perspectives. A motion chart is used to provide a dynamic view of justices' decision towards certain issue areas(like crime) over years, which could be co-explained by social changes over the same period of time.

What has been published at data.gov?

This demo use exhibit to provide faceted browsing on data.gov dataset catalog Search and presenting data-gov catalog entries using RDFa and Yahoo! Boss.

This demo counts the number of Data.gov datasets contributed by each US government agency.

This demo queries different revisions of Dataset 92 (Data.gov Catalog) since July 2009 and compares the number of entries found (each entry corresponds to one of the non-geo datasets published at Data.gov at the time cached). Using this demo, we can easily see that Data.gov is steadily publishing more datasets. 92http://data-gov.tw.rpi.edu/demo/static/demo-92-history.php list recently added, deleted or updated datasets (raw dataset and tool catalog) since last data.gov data catalog update.
