What Are Teaching Circles? McKendree University's Teaching Circles provide a non-threatening forum for faculty to enhance their teaching skills and build camaraderie. Faculty participants observe each other in the classroom and then meet to discuss what constitutes effective teaching. The program focuses on different teaching styles and other aspects of teaching, while eliminating evaluations and judgments Previous Teaching Circles participants include faculty from Education, English, Theater, Political Science, Business, and many other schools and departments!

How Does the Program Work? You send me your schedule. I put you with three other people (so we'll have groups of four people each). Your small group will meet at the beginning of the semester and figure out which of each other's class(es) you can visit. So, for example, if Alan and I are in the same group, he could come to my TTh 11:00 American Politics class one time this semester. And I would visit his MWF 9:30 Calculus II class one time. At the end of the semester, your small group (of four) meets again (my group met at Thip's last year), and you discuss what you all observed that worked really well. So I, for example, would say Alan did a great job of drawing students out and engaging them by doing x, y, and z—or whatever good things I observed. The program only takes about 6 hours of your time the whole semester!
