A progress update: Design & Engineering issues:- Interface scope and responsibility Interface control via a global reference system Feasibility study of using Cryo-Coolers The use of Cryo-Cooler for the AFC magnet cooling is proofing feasible We have to do further work to determine whether a single cooler or two cooler arrangement is best for the job Sumitomo SDRK-415-D GM cooler (1.5 W at 4.2 K) can fit the bill. A pulse tube cooler from Cryomech is an alternative choice.

A progress update: Design & Engineering issues:- Interface scope and responsibility Interface control via a global reference system Feasibility study of using Cryo-Coolers Detail design & engineering for module connection Magnet force estimate Jim Rochford at RAL together with Holger at Oxford have been doing a lot of reiterative calculation on magnet forces at various operating scenarios and fault condition. However, the recent repositioning of the coils by Mike Green has resulted in significant reduction in the imbalanced forces. This reiterative calculation will continue until we are satisfied with the results

The Cold Mass support design allows us to align the magnet to the vessel true centre which in turn can be aligned to the beamline. We will develop the idea further in the coming weeks and this may change how we support the modules

Horizontal test cryostat will be designed and fabricated at KEK. MICE absorbers will be tested at KEK W/ cold gas-He at 10-20K. MICE absorbers will be shipped to RAL with sensors and real windows (ready to use).  PROPOSE L-H2 test at FNAL/MTA with a spare MICE absorber.  PROPOSE Thermometers/LH2 level sensors and wiring/connecters are existing. 3-5 Bodies by (KEK) 6-10 Windows by (USA) 20K Gas-He Test at (KEK) Test check absorbers & assemble in MICE at RAL L-H2 Test at MTA with a Spare Body and Windows

We are carrying out detail stress analysis to establish how the magnet moves when individual support is adjusted

Clarification + diagram on Hydrogen Safety system Detail descriptions of the Control system

The following information is still outstanding:

Detail description of the C&I design and arrangement Product details / category of the control instruments applicable in the AFC module Work schedule of the Window test and supply Work schedule of the Absorber body, mechanical seal and other relevant equipment Re-baseline document on the AFC Module Safety issues & safety considerations to be included The re- formatting of the Word document as it is nor readable by some Word browsers

Summary The basic project infrastructure of the work packages within the AFC module is now in an advance stage. We still need further effort in the C&I area The use of Cryo-Cooler is looking promising and further effort is needed to make sure that Safety of the system is not compromised. The module connection together with the module supports are undergoing a revision and we should firm up the idea shortly so that we can get on with the detail enginering. The R&D work is progressing, albeit a little slower than planned. Interface with the detector module supplier is progressing and further effort is needed to bring this to a reasonable stage where detail engineering work can start.
