ShaftsandTunnelsShaftsandTunnelsShaftsandTunnelsShaftsandTunnels By Gillian LaRochelle, Eric Laudner, Jacob Phillips and Emily Scatchard.

Shafts Shafts are deep and dark vertical tunnels that go straight down like elevators to the underground tunnels. There is also a type of shaft that is horizontal called an adit.

Tunnels and Tunnels are dug in the side of a hill or mountain. They are used to get coal and gold. Beams are used to hold up their roofs.

Canaries In Coal Mines Shafts and Tunnels could have dangerous gases and when miners walked in these gases, they would get killed. The miners knew this so they got canaries(who, by the way, are very sensitive birds), put them in cages with sticks attached to them and took them to the mines.
