Supporting and Supervising New Employees Lynn C. Anderson, Dean of International Education Director, International Center Friday, March 20, 2009

Remember what it feels like? Inexperienced as a professional Acute need for positive mentoring Glamorized expectations Intense evaluation by professional “gatekeepers”

Remember what it feels like? Porous emotional boundaries Ethical and legal confusions Acute performance anxiety and fear Other?

How you can support and challenge new staff Careful training, set expectations, be concrete Give lots of positive feedback, people work toward what is praised Be explicit about your supervisory style Give staff permission to make mistakes and grow, give constructive criticism

Supervising new staff Dealing with down side of being a professional Balancing care for self and care for others Help staff know that they matter to you and to UCSD

Training new staff TIP: theory, information, practice Use cognitive hooks Move from structured, concrete, and single responsibilities to complex and varied responsibilities Shadow and be shadowed

Case Studies David: smart, eager, well-spoken, charming, focused on doing it right, follows appointment agenda perfectly Student: academically able, adjusting well, Grandmother just died, tears start to flow, David says “great, let’s talk about next term.” You, as the supervisor, are observing this appointment. What do you do?

Case Studies Hao: smart, eager, has learned every detail she can about your area and her responsibilities Student: comes in on walk-in with a fairly straightforward question. Hao starts to share every bit of her knowledge. You overhear this at the front desk, as supervisor, what do you do?

Your Case Studies
