“Literacy and Numeracy through the Arts” website summary SESSION 1 APPRECIATING THE IMAGE Look at Yvonne Audette' s Dream of an Ancient Tablet Discuss the types of materials and implements the artist may have used to create the work and possible meanings for the title of the work. Identify the main symbols that Audette has used in her work and consider the work as a system of signs or symbols that communicate meaning. Select some of the symbols and brainstorm possible meanings for each symbol. Create a verbal narrative based on an interpretation of the symbols. Yvonne Audette, Dream of an ancient tablet

“Literacy and Numeracy through the Arts” website summary (con’t) SESSION 2 CREATING PERSONAL SYMBOLS Select a partner and create a fantasy dream together. Write the dream, ensuring that the dream has a beginning, middle and an end. Devise a series of six symbols to represent the main aspects of the dream, and record the symbols using a pencil and paper. Use symbols that are abstract in nature, rather than diagrammatic. Select complimentary shapes for each of your symbols from the following library of body shapes. Alternatively create your own library of body shapes to represent your symbols. For example, a hand placed in front of the face may represent a locked doorway.

“Literacy and Numeracy through the Arts” website summary (con’t) SESSIONS 3 & 4 FORMING THE DANCEWORK Make selections from your movements and sequence the movements to form the beginning, middle and end of your dream Devise a list of verbs to describe the artist’s process of producing the marks. For example, scratch, scrawl, tear, repeat, peel, etch, layer, slap. Select two or three of the verbs and experiment with applying these qualities to parts of the movement sequence. Experiment with working with the same, and then differing qualities to those of your partner.

“Literacy and Numeracy through the Arts” website summary (con’t) SESSION 5 APPRECIATING OTHER DANCEWORKS View a dance work Form a list of verbs to describe the movements. Check to see if any of these verbs overlap with the verbs used to describe Discuss the ways in which choreographers and artists can work in similar ways. For example, both can use symbols to communicate meaning. Look at and examine reviews of other dance works and discuss the purpose, audience and structure of a review. Edit and publish your review. View the work of other pairs in the class. Decipher the movement qualities that they have applied to their work from the initial class list.

“Literacy and Numeracy through the Arts” website summary (con’t) Session6: EXTENDING THE DANCEWORK Consider the layering process in the artists’ work and guess how many layers artists used in the work. Form a group of four by joining with another pair. Layer the work of each pair to form one new work, where each pair maintains their original work, but performs their work at the same time as the other pair. Consider staggering the movement. Experiment with layering movement patterns over the top of each other to create canons. Consider the way in which another person might make a "movement rubbing" of one of the motifs as a method of translating perceived form and texture. Decide on the placement of each person in the group.

“Literacy and Numeracy through the Arts” website summary (con’t) SESSION 7 PERFORMING THE DANCEWORK Discuss the notion of the wall in Dream of an Ancient Tablet. Use the information on the reverse side of the print to stimulate discussion. Use a digital camera to collect photographs of walls in the local environment. Select walls exhibiting interesting textures, marks, signage and graffiti. Each group selects one of the photographs and prints onto an overhead transparency. Use an overhead projector to illuminate a large-scale projection of the wall into a performance space. Perform the dancework in the midst of the projection, layering, scratching and scrawling movements into the space. Use a digital camera to photograph significant shapes in each dancework. Print the digital photographs of the danceworks next to the original pen and paper dream symbols for inclusion worksample portfolios. Discuss the creation of moving symbol systems, etched onto a virtual wall.
