Shepard Bros., Inc. Committed to the Environment

Shepard Bros., Inc. and the Green Chemistry Revolution

What is the Green Chemistry Revolution? The Green Chemistry Revolution includes a broad spectrum of environmentally conscious approaches to: –Chemicals – Their composition, production, distribution, use and disposal –Energy – Minimizing the carbon footprint –Engineering – Reducing operating costs and improving efficiency while minimizing waste generation

What is our commitment? Shepard Bros. is committed to developing and using green chemical and engineering solutions to help our customers meet their environmental, social and financial goals.

Green Chemistry

The US EPA defines Green Chemistry as follows: Green chemistry, also known as sustainable chemistry, refers to environmentally friendly chemicals and processes that result in: reduced waste, eliminating costly end-of-the pipe treatments; safer products; and reduced use of energy and resources- all improving the competitiveness of chemical manufacturers and their customers. Green Chemistry Defined

Green Chemistry Hierarchy Chemical products and processes should be designed to the highest level of this hierarchy and be cost-competitive in the market. Green Chemistry: Source Reduction / Prevention of Chemical Hazards –Design chemical products to be less hazardous to human health and the environment* –Use feedstocks and reagents that are less hazardous to human health and the environment* –Design syntheses and other processes to be less energy and materials intensive (high atom economy, low E-factor) –Use feedstocks derived from annually renewable resources or from abundant waste –Design chemical products for increased, more facile reuse or recycling Reuse or Recycle Chemicals Treat Chemicals to Render Them Less Hazardous Dispose of Chemicals Properly *chemicals that are less hazardous to human health and the environment are: –Less toxic to organisms and ecosystems –Not persistent or bioaccumulative in organisms or the environment –Inherently safer with respect to handling and use

What is Shepard Bros. doing to promote Green Chemistry? Our goal is to design high performance chemicals that are: –Less toxic –Less hazardous and will –Result in a smaller environmental impact

Green Engineering

What is Green Engineering? "Green Engineering" encompasses those engineering practices that will reduce or eliminate both operational costs and environmental impact.

What is Shepard Bros. doing to promote Green Engineering? Our focus is on promoting engineering changes that will: –Reduce operating costs –Improve the performance of mechanical equipment and chemical programs –Reduce environmental impact –Reduce worker exposure to chemicals

Shepard Bros., Inc. Committed to our customers and the environment

As an Affiliate Member of the National Association of Chemical Distributors we are committed: To recognize and respond to community concerns about chemicals, their handling, and transportation. To make health, safety, security, and environmental considerations a priority in our planning for all existing and new operations, products, processes, and facilities. To inform emergency response officials, employees, customers, and the public of manufacturer's information on chemical-related health or environmental hazards, and the manufacturer's recommendations on protective measures.

To work with customers, in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations, on product stewardship including handling, use, transportation, and disposal of chemical products. To operate our plants and facilities in a manner that protects the health and safety of our employees, the public and the environment. To cooperate in resolving problems created by past handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals. To participate with government and others in creating responsible laws, regulations, and practices to help safeguard the community, workplace, and environment. To promote the principles and practices of the Responsible Distribution Process SM by sharing experiences and offering assistance to others who produce, handle, use, transport, or dispose of chemicals.
