You need to know about … blogs, podcasts, wikis, social networks, online forums & RSS……. Dr Andrew Oliver LTDU & BLU University of Hertfordshire

Or you need to know about ‘Web 2.0’ (or what’s happening out there…) Web 1. 0: read only, Web 2.0: read AND write Primary info on the net provided by the user: – Blogs & podcasts taking over from websites as news – Wikis & tagging & forums: primary knowledge & research sources Data & structure no longer exclusive to the host website

Which leads to eLearning 2.0 Socially based software: – Blogs – Wikis – Social tagging – Forums – Podcasting All are: collaborative, iterative, inclusive (discussion) = knowledge building & sharing

Where are they? What and who are they? (good for Oct 2006, expired Nov 2006) And also: Google Maps, Twitter, Hi5, Orkut, Tagged etc. etc.

What caused this? The users did! The rise of social networks MySpace: – 66 million visitors in June-06 – 114 million visitors in June-07 – Growth rate 72% (April-05 to April-06, 367%) Facebook: – 14 million visitors in June-06 – 52 million visitors in June-07 – Growth rate 270% – year olds (181% growth)

What caused this? The users did! The rise of user generated content Wikipedia ranks as 16th most-visited U.K. internet property, 2005 it ranked 78th. In July 2006 there were 6.5 million visitors (up 253 percent versus one year ago).

So what’s going to happen? Exponential growth. Estimated that the Web is: doubling in size every 120 days. doubling in size 3 times per year. Ian Jukes (From Gutenberg to Gates to Google and Beyond)From Gutenberg to Gates to Google and Beyond

And? Therefore more than 80% of the sites that will exist a year from now…. DON’T EXIST TODAY. Ian Jukes (From Gutenberg to Gates to Google and Beyond)From Gutenberg to Gates to Google and Beyond

So what does this all mean? In the words of Sir Ken Robinson “We have no idea what is going to happen in the future. No idea on how this [advances in education technology] will play out…If you think of it, children starting school this year will be retiring in Nobody has a clue what the world will look like in 5 years time and yet we’re meant to be educating them for it.” Clip
