2009 Summer Institute Welcome TechMath Cohort 3 Teachers! Bertie -1 Martin -2 Hertford -1 Lenoir -3 Nash -1 Halifax -5 Wayne -2 Pitt -9

In October 1957, the Soviet Union successfully launched the first man-made satellite to orbit the earth.

Shocked by the loss of their international status, Americans responded in part with a commitment to excellence in mathematics and science education.

And the United States took over the lead in Space Exploration.

Now, about 50 years later, the United States once again faces “an equally daunting challenge in the potential economic threats and opportunities posed by globalization.” Steven C. Beering (2007), Chairman of the National Science Board National Science Board (2007). A National Action Plan for Addressing the Critical Needs of the U.S. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education System.

Once again, America turns towards improving mathematics and science education.

The TechMath approach is to support teachers of mathematics—whether mathematics is the content or the tool– in empowering students to value and do mathematics.
