Global Meeting on Government Interoperability Frameworks 2010 Public Software and Interoperability: An Opportunity for International Knowledge Sharing

Floss and Public Commons Moderator: Fausto Alvim, Projeto do Software Público Internacional / International Public Software Project GIFs ask for knowledge sharing not only between national government institutions but also with civil society, private business organizations and other countries. This is necessary for the shift from e-Government to e-Governance. FLOSS has characteristics that favor the collective creation and exchange of knowledge, but lacks some of the guarantees that public administration many times demand. The creation of an International Public Commons Framework that would ease the sharing not only of code but of also of experiences in deploying FLOSS solutions, best case examples, training procedures and so on would be an asset to GIFs as whole. The discussions will examine ongoing initiatives and explore possible further developments.
