Freshman Guide Going to college is the first move on your own. Here is some advice on how to make the best of your time, social life and independence.

Approaching college life Study (a combination of theory and practice) always comes first Managing your time Taking part in extracurricular activities Making friends Keeping fit Reading at least 10 literature classics Making a budget (be frugal) Developing a positive hobby

In high school, you were there from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Now your time is your own. It’s time to improve time management skills. Here are a few tips: 1. Draw up a plan for your campus life, e.g. make a semester calendar/a weekly schedule/ daily list 2. Find the best time of the day. During the hours you work best, study your hardest lessons or the ones you like the least. 3. Use one study area regularly. 4. Study two hours for every hour spent in class. 5. Make class time your best time. Go to class prepared, and listen attentively.

Don’t just be a bookworm  Case: I found there were so many versatile people on campus. Compared to them, I was only a bookworm. I felt frustrated and thought I would never again hold the No 1 position in class. (Wang Shangzhe, 20, sophomore, school of Journalism and Communication, Communication University of China )

Don’t just be a bookworm  Solution: Try to get familiar with your environment instead of staying alone. You also need to improve learning methods. Find school activities and organizations you’re interested in and good at.

3 Ps on English learning PPractice: watch (English movie, TV, or videos), listen (to tapes, mp3, CD, or radio program ), read (textbooks, newspapers, magazines and literature works ), write (essays )and say( imitation comes first ) PPatience PPerseverance

Icebreaker  Game Play Instructions: One group of students will be invited to the front at a time; The 1st student is required to repeat to the 2nd one what he/she has read from the slip of paper;( make sure others can’t hear you; otherwise you are breaking the rules ).In turn, this goes on until the last student gets the sentence and reports it loudly to the whole class. The group which gets the most words right within the least time will be the champion.

Icebreaker  What do you get from this game? Paths of thinking: 1. Teamwork spirit 2. The importance of English speaking and listening
