In much of the world, measles is still a deadly disease

Preventing Measles costs less than 1 US dollar Measles Fact SheetMeasles Fact Sheet. World Health Organization. 02 Nov. 2010

Outline  What is Measles?  Signs and Symptoms  Who is at Risk?  Transmission  Treatment  Prevention  Global Health Response Public Health Image Library. CDC.

MEASLES is a viral disease that infects the throat and lungs Measles Fact SheetMeasles Fact Sheet. World Health Organization. 02 Nov Public Health Image Library. CDC.

Measles presents itself in three stages  First Sign: Mild- moderate fever  Initial Stage (3 C’s):  Coryza  Cough  Conjunctivitis

Measles presents itself in three stages  Second Stage (2-3 days):  Koplik’s spots  High fever  Rash

A rash occurs in the final stages  Third Stage (>3 days)  Rash SPREADS  In most people the Rash DISAPPEARS after 4-5 days

In 30% of patients severe complications arise Low platelet count Brain swelling ges/thrombocytopenia-low- platelet-count.jpg

The main at risk groups are children and the malnourished  Vitamin A deficiency

Measles is incredibly contagious  coughing and sneezing  People who recover are immune

Measles is easily treated if one has the resources  Good nutrition, adequate fluid intake  vitamin A supplements supplements.jpg

Prevention is possible through vaccination  By 2000, measles practically eliminated in the US

The Measles vaccine is cheap!  Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR)  Two (2) doses of the vaccine

There is a lack of immunization coverage in Africa and SE Asia erage.jpg

Access to healthcare in developing countries is rare  Inaccessible immunization services  Poverty, poor health systems, lack of information

Several organizations have made a joint effort to eliminate Measles  FOURTH Millennium Development Goal (MDG 4)  The Measles Initiative

The implementation of the vaccine has changed the world  measles mortality reduced by 90%  Vaccinated nearly 700 million hpns/images/uploads/47797chi ldren_ _db jpg

MCV coverage is inversely proportional to the number of cases 224,408 cases reported 164,000 deaths (2008) 82% MCV coverage 60% of countries reached >=90% MCV coverage ation_monitoring/diseases/b ig_measles_global_coverag e.gif
