JEFFREY PITTMAN PREPARED FOR CLASS, AUGUST 2009 Communication Skills

Communication and messages Consider the following two messages I received this week - (I removed identifying information, but otherwise left the messages intact) The two examples are representative of many other messages I receive on a frequent basis Jeffrey Pittman 2

Communication and messages “Hello Mr. Pittman this is *** i called u this morning about getting into the *** class the reason why i need this class is because i only have 2 more semester left of school and i cant take my last *** class next semester which will be my last without taking this class 1st i have already looked up the prerequesites for the class and it says on the there that you have to have taken 2033 OR 2133 and i have already tooken 2033 and i am enrolled in I really need this class so that i can take my last ***class next semester so i can graduate in may thank you” Jeffrey Pittman 3

Communication and messages My name is * * * and i am a senior that will be graduating in December. I am asking for a over ride to get in either CRN * * *, or * * *. I would prefer * * * but either will work. I am asking this because i have signed up for another class that is four days a week, andi didnt realize that until today and that conflicts with my work schedule either one of the other two will go better with my schedule. if you could give me an override for one of these classes it would be greatley appreciated. Thanks * * * Jeffrey Pittman 4

Communication as presented by Internal Comms Hub See Young managers lack communication skillsYoung managers lack communication skills “ ‘Apprentices’ need better communication skills The Apprentice TV series – where aspiring business tycoons are challenged each week until only one remains – reveals that communication ability is in short supply for young would-be hotshots.” The Apprentice Jeffrey Pittman 5

Communication as presented by Internal Comms Hub (cont.) “UK conference and business learning awards organizer, The World of Learning 2008, recently surveyed 267 learning and development experts about the program. Experts were asked, ‘Which skills do you believe The Apprentice highlighted for young managers to improve?’ The World of Learning 2008 Communication skills top the results, suggesting these are the main weakness for a young ‘Apprentice’. Survey respondents say ‘communication’ (71%) is in need of the greatest improvement, closely followed by better ‘leadership’ (62%) and ‘team working’ (59%).” Jeffrey Pittman 6

Communication as presented by North Sound Jobs See All Together Now - Younger workers want jobs, older workers want to keep goingAll Together Now - Younger workers want jobs, older workers want to keep going “I hear constantly from the Society for Human Resource Management that Generation Y is brilliant at technology but not so good at establishing people relationships, giving presentations and other communication basics,” Hoberman said.” Jeffrey Pittman 7

Communication as presented by North Sound Jobs (cont.) “The deficiency is so pronounced, he said, that many companies offer basic writing courses to bring new hires up to speed. Such expenditures chip away at one of the perceived advantages younger people have in the work force: They traditionally have been seen as cheaper hires because their pay and health care requirements are lower. However, hiring companies also tend to view them as less reliable and loyal than their older counterparts, and even in today’s cutthroat business world, loyalty has worth.” Jeffrey Pittman 8

YouTube The following YouTube video was prepared by Kansas State University students as part of a class project on college students today  A Vision of Students Today A Vision of Students Today From the video  Is information scarce today?  What has been your average class size? (115 in video)  How many teachers know your name? (18% in video)  What percentage of assignments do you read? Etc. Jeffrey Pittman 9
