Temperature Approximation of Rocket Motor Casing Greg Metzgar Joseph Wahlquist

The Question Will the motor casing reach a temperature at which it will fail?

Known Flame Temperature Inside Rocket Geometry Velocity of Rocket

Analysis Stress on motor casing was found using thick wall pressure vessel theory Critical temperature was found (the temperature at which Yield Strength is equal to the Applied Stress) T cr =623 K

Analysis Four simultaneous equations were created to represent the system These equations were solved using excel Casing Temperature Found to be 386 K T cr T3T3 FUEL CASING WALL OPEN SPACE OUTER WALL

Experiment Selected Thermocouple CHAL 005 max service Temp 866 K response time 0.04 sec Attached to data storage system onboard the rocket

Conclusion The motor will not explode because of failing motor casing walls
