Beamline Takashi Kobayashi 1 Global Analysis Meeting Nov. 29, 2007

Beamline group will be responsible to Beamline construction/commissioning Beamline operation to assure stable beam and data taking Detector calibration – P(CT, SSEM, ESM)/MU/(INGRID) Monitor/control beam stability – Intensity, center position, profile Provide minimum beam information for SK online reduction – Timing, POT,.. Provide all beam related information necessary to physics analysis – good beam run and good beam spill – Normalization (POT, Nmu) – Prediction of beam properties w/ syst. error  (E ) and  e(E ) at ND and SK beam profile at ND Far to near extrapolation (F/N ratio or Matrix or ?) – Depend on overall analysis strategy – Need discussion in this group – Beam group would like to make proposal 2

Toward these Beam stability – p/MU monitor (and INGRID) Good beam run & spill – Establish selection criteria – provide database and API to access it – Based on Beam status Proton intensity, position, profile Target, horn status MUMON intensity, center position, profile Good GPS data beam prediction – Develop and maintain beam MC G3-based jnubeam on CVS – People who can modify the code will (should) be restricted to “experts” Implement final precise beam line geometry, materials, p beam properties Incorporate NA61 hadron production data, best algorism to be established (Later replaced to G4-based program if necessary. Several years later?) – Provide “official” prediction for physics analysis Beam group will be responsible to produce beam properties from simulation For various studies, users can freely run the program by themselves – Even for this case, we will provide standard “official” CARD file information as default 3

NA61 analysis RUN ended on October 28th –all NA61 detector components worked well –new ToF detector ready in time this run –slow DAQ -> upgrade for 2008 –physics data collected: ~ 600 k events 2 cm C target ~ 200 k events 90 cm C target –most of the 2007 goals achieved Analysis already started during the run –absolute p + C ->  (K) + X cross section (thin target) –  (K) / incident proton (thick target) –expect first results (preliminary) in spring 2008 –too soon to assess the quality of the data and precisions Sandro Bravar 4

Analysis status NA61 software inherited from NA49 –basically working –old tools, rather large effort was required to update and port to SLC4; –some issues still to be solved organization of the software / analysis –working groups being formed –definition of tasks and manpower –analysis strategy software technical issues are being addressed and solved alignment and calibrations (TPC and TOF) ongoing –expect several months to complete all tasks (end of February 2008) data production (DST, miniDST, …) tests ongoing monte carlo studies and production chain under development normalization (trigger) studies started Sandro Bravar 5

Analysis plan complete all calibrations by end of February (maybe a bit optimistic) reconstruction of data (DST and miniDST production) by end of January using existing tools (PID calibrations will be added later) re-production possible after optimization of reconstruction algorithms (cannot wait forever) production of monte carlo events for tracking studies and optimization about to start development of analysis tools using reconstruction test data just or about to start « analysis » to start after calibrations and reconstruction completed develop different alogrithms for thin and thick target (e.g. vertex reconstruction) Sandro Bravar 6
