Introduction HEAT TRANSFER Science that deals with methods by which thermal energy is able to move from one location to another

HEAT TRANSFER There are three mechanisms by which There are three mechanisms by which thermal energy is transported:

Heat Transfer ConductionConvectionRadiation

CONVECTION Convection is the process in which heat is carried from place to place by the bulk movement of a fluid. Convection currents are set up when a pan of water is heated.

TYPES OF CONVECTION 1- NATURAL CONVECTION: 1- NATURAL CONVECTION: Density differences (usually caused by differences in temperature) within different parts of a fluid create flow. 2- FORCED CONVECTION: 2- FORCED CONVECTION: Use of a mechanical device (pump, fan) to produce movement of the fluid mass. Use of a mechanical device (pump, fan) to produce movement of the fluid mass.

q = h A Δt q = heat transfer rate. W, Btu/h h = convective heat transfer coefficient. A = heat transfer surface Area =ΠdL. Δt = difference between hot and cold.

Conclusion Convection and radiation important in heat transfer, but calculations can be tricky, especially when airflow is involved.
